Screen Shot 2014-02-19 at 9.55.40 AM

Last week I introduced y’all to the PRETTY MUDDY event. And told you what they are all about.  They host this muddy race in 4 cities in the US. And one of the 4 cities it’s going down in is … THE BIG D – Dallas, TX at Skyline Ranch on April 26th, 2014! Since I live in the metroplex and I am a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador, the folks at Pretty Muddy are allowing me to host a giveaway so that you can attend for FREE!

This is geared to be a ladies event but they also have a family wave where all members of your family are welcome ツ

What is Pretty Muddy?
Pretty Muddy is a 5K adventurous obstacle course mud run for any woman who wants to get outside, spend time with friends, and have fun. And believe it or not it was dreamed up by a pair of husbands that were looking to do something for their wives. Friendship, Fun and Fitness! They wanted to provide a stress-free environment where you can just let loose. It’s a 5K that you can run or walk. It’s not timed. And the obstacles are legit. Nothing to worry about. Just have fun!

In other news
I know I’ve been MIA for a couple of days but I’m here, just haven’t gotten around to posting my workouts. I have however been eating! Not so horribly bad but I still feel bad, does that make sense to anyone? I’m definitely not overeating, but I don’t always have the ideal meals or balanced for that matter. But I did let a little too much SUGAR re-enter my life. But I’m back to cutting that out. So we’ll see. It truly is a roller coaster to be 100% clean and perfect and then only letting some things slip in. But I’m not letting it all fall away. I’m sticking to clean eating in general. So yeehaw!

2/14/14
Test Day
Mobility: Hips!
Oh my burning HIPS. Mobility is never a bad thing in my book. I just don’t do enough.

Strength: Hang squat clean 2,2,2,2
These I could not do. So I did some chicken wing cleans. Didn’t work up too heavy but still put in work.

2/14/14 WOD

2/14/14 WOD

MetCon: Open WOD 11.3
Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 5 minutes of:
Squat clean (110lb / 50kg)
Jerk (110lb / 50kg)
Coach T had me do Chicken Wing Cleans and STOH with the multi-grip bar. Since it’s silly do clean, drop bar, walk to rack. I did sets of 5 cleans, and 5 STOH. I think I did 85lbs, but can’t remember. I had one miss of the clean and that was pretty painful on a meaty part of my arm. But other than being SLOW, I was huffing and puffing. 5 minutes is not a lot of time to do work but then again it can KILL YOU! Total reps: 34

2/15/14
Community WOD
You just never know what Coach is going to throw at us for a Community WOD but most of the time it’s teamwork and this day was no different. It was forecasted to be an AWESOME day but it was still a little chill at 9am. But once you get sweating it was perfect. We went outside for some ROWING and some YOKE/SLED PUSHING.

Not sure at what point this pic was taken but I'm definitely spent.

Not sure at what point this pic was taken but I’m definitely spent.

Teams of 3. 20 minute AMRAP. Sprint Row 250m. Then push YOKE for 30 yds. That was the best/worst team WOD ever. I’m not a great rower but for 250m I’m ok for my height… at least I feel good. But pushing that damn YOKE was a different story. It’s not even a far distance but we are in a race and we gotta move! We weren’t even halfway through and wondering when time would be called but we just kept chugging. We were so close to finishing our 5th round as a team but fell short by a some meters and a yoke push. It was good work put in by everyone!

2/18/14
Skill: KB Snatches
Today I felt good doing these. It was a first! But it was also light weight. With my wrist still not 100% I didn’t want to push fatigue and then doing something stupid. So I just stayed with the 26lb KB.

2/18/14 WOD

2/18/14 WOD

MetCon: 1 minute of Push Ups, 2 minutes of Double Unders, 3 minutes Air Squats, 4 KB Snatches and 5 minutes of Pull Ups
This sounded much better on paper. I managed 32 Push Ups, then only 83 DUs. This was disappointing. I just couldn’t find a rhythm. So I felt I better get some Air Squats in but my hips were on fire. I did get 101 though. KB Snatches started off strong but dwindled fast. And Pull Ups were a sad affair. I don’t remember my exact counts but my Final was: 301 Reps

2/19/14
Strength: L sit hold 10 sets max hold
Yaaaa, still can’t hold my body weight fully so Coach T had me do my FAVORITE hollow rocks and sit ups. Boooo Hollow Rocks.

2/19/14 WOD

2/19/14 WOD

MetCon: 10 min AMRAP of 5 STOH 115lbs, 10 Power Cleans 115lbs and 15 Bar Burpees
I’ve become the substitute QUEEN. For me 5 STOH with multigrip bar, 10 Deadlifts at 115lbs and well I can’t get out of burpees, so 15 Bar Burpees. I was tired and the bar felt heavy. I didn’t get very far: 3 Rounds + 4 reps of STOH

That’s a WRAP!
A lot of work over the past few days. And some rest too. It’s been beautiful weather down here in TEXAS, so I’m hoping it’s here to stay! Please, Please, Please enter for the Pretty Muddy race GIVEAWAY. I want to be there but am making no promises. Two of my kids play tournament baseball and we could be on opposite ends of the earth when that weekend arrives. But I’d love for a few of my readers to get an opportunity to go and experience all the fun. And also remember if you’re not in DALLAS or don’t win an entry, you can still get $5 off your race entry. Just use the code: GIRLSGONESPORTY.

Alright y’all have a great HUMP DAY. Do something great today!!!

Can’t Stop Now

quotes_blog_e_roosevelt

It’s Day TEN of the Whole30. I am 1/3 of the way there and I’m still truckin’ along. And it’s a ROLLERCOASTER of emotions! Days TEN and ELEVEN are described as the ‘hardest days’. Yay for that, right? NO, not at all.

I’m really at a loss for words on how I feel. I don’t feel bad but I don’t feel super awesome at this moment. I’m doing the work, eating the foods but I’m just so blah. I’m definitely proud of myself for being strong for the past 10 days but I’m losing steam fast. I need a recharge. I have 20 days to go!

1/14/14 Lunch

1/14/14 Lunch

My food is still tasty and yummy but again losing the excitement! I definitely don’t want to become humdrum when it comes to my meals. Since we decided to do the pork recipe again, I’ve been slacking on making the sides for Week 2 from Weeknight Paleo. Until last night, which I was interested in making because I would be using Parsnips and Turnips. Turns out I DO NOT LIKE either one. So not my flavor pallet and now I have 3 containers full of root veggies I am not happy with. Part of me says suck it up and EAT IT but last night was a struggle. I was so over it, I didn’t even take a picture. How do I make roasted turnips and parsnips into a winning meal? Maybe Ernie will eat them all 😀

Turnips! Bleh!

Turnips! Bleh!

Two Days of BOOM Box
1/14/14
50 heavy Russian swings
Coach left it up to us to pick our own version of HEAVY. But we all know we need to still pick up his version of heavy! 1 1/2 POOD. I was very low energy last night and was not having much fun with these KB swings. I did 20 right off the bat and then broke it up.

Midline: Max Plank Hold (Everyone must accumulate at least 5 minutes)
Ugh. Planks are a pain in the arse. I held for 1 1/2 minutes before dropping and pretty much held the rest of the 5 minutes owed in increments of 30 seconds to 45 seconds. I’m not good with long holds of any kind.

1/14/14 WOD

1/14/14 WOD

MetCon: 800m run, 21-15-9 of Ring Dips and Strict Pull Ups,  200m sprint!
Oh for the love. You all know I despise running. It’s the worst. But GUESS WHAT? I trotted the whole 800m without walking or stopping!!! I ran it UNBROKEN. I haven’t done that in over a year! Mostly cause I’m a big baby, but also cause I’m just a little fatty who eats like shit! But now, with 9 days of Whole30 under my belt, I’m just a trottin’ away. I even got a little faster on my second lap! But my calves were smoked. Instead of RING DIPS, I was tasked with incline pushups on a bar set on the pull up rig. At first I was a little slow. Not sure my wrist would hold up but once I got comfortable I moved a little quicker. Pull Ups were super slow and took forever! I never thought I’d finish the 21, and that’s with BANDS! If it weren’t for me sucking at Pull Ups so bad I would have had a much better time. When it was time for the 200m SPRINT, it was more like a jog, walk, trot, walk, trot to the finish. Time: 24:32. Boy I’m slow!

1/15/14
I was really debating on showing up at 5 a.m. I laid in bed and had an internal conversation/argument with myself. My body is tired. My brain is awake. It’s cold outside. I could use another 1 1/2 hours of sleep. GET UP. GET MOVING. JUST GO. I should have played THE GRIND. I’ve shared this before but it’s just so darn good. Here it is again:

So I went and the parking lot is EMPTY. Where are my 5 a.m. peeps? Hellooo? So it’s just me and Coach T.

Midline: 30 evil wheels
Now that I have more faith in my wrist, I can roll out a little further. Not so evil today!

Strength: DL 4×3 Heavy but make it look good.
I worked my way up to 185lbs for my HEAVY. This shouldn’t be heavy to me because my 1RM is 235lbs. But today it was heavy. I was telling coach, that it’s not that I don’t think I can go heavier, but my HANDS hurt so bad. Just holding onto the bar with 150lbs hurts my sad old hands. Anyhow 4 sets of 3 at 185lbs was just fine for this morning.

1/15/14 WOD

1/15/14 WOD

MetCon: 4 min elimination (like 13.5) 3 rounds 30 Air Squats 10 Burpees If you don’t make the first cap you owe your coach 400m run on the spot. Go for as long as you can! DU Practice if time remains.
I knew coming in this would be deceiving. It’s easy movements but it won’t be an easy workout. I just didn’t want to run, at all. And it’s cold outside. 3-2-1 GO! Bam I did the first round in 1:07. I thought I could get get under a minute but on my 7th burpee I slowed down. Not good. Got up for the second round and the Air Squats felt like I was in QUICKSAND, no wait, CEMENT! I couldn’t just GO. I was struggling. I slowed down too much. As for Burpees, forget about it. Those were so bad. Time was ticking. I go for Round 3, look at the clock and was like, crap I have to run. I managed to get in 20 Air Squats before the 4 minutes was up and off I went. Boooo! Final: 2 rounds + 20 squats. That was a poor showing indeed.

That’s a Wrap!
Still excited it’s Day TEN and I’m going strong. Emotionally I may not be feeling it but I’ll get there. Soon Enough! In other news, I have a giveaway coming up soon! Paleo Parents is releasing a new book called 3Phase Paleo.

Cover-3-Phase-Paleo-by-Paleo-Parents1-571x740

I am in the middle of reading it myself, but when I’m done, I’ll be reviewing it here on my good ol’ blog and I’ll hosting a giveaway to one of you!

It’s Hump Day! Make it a good one!

And then I got tired

quotes_blog_chandler

I was feeling pretty good Day ONE and Day TWO. But it caught up to me. The HANGOVER as Whole30 states may happen in Days TWO & THREE. And I felt it this morning at the BOOM Box. Normally after the warm up, especially in the mornings, I finally wake up. The blood is flowing, the heart rate is up and my brain starts to work. But today, I was like a slug. Moving slow. Spaced out. Eventually adrenaline kicked in but the rest of the morning has been so blah. I know this will pass but right now I just want to crawl into bed. The good thing is that I truly believe the Clean Eating is instantly helping my sad muscles recover much more quickly. I’m not near as sore as I have been the past couple of months and my body is overall feeling better for the most part.

Screen-Shot-2013-01-11-at-3.07.23-PM

Many Whole30ers report headaches, fatigue, and general malaise during this part of the program. This, my friends, is completely normal. Your body is working its way through a whole host of junk it stored from the foods (or food-like-products) you used to eat. This process lasts a day for some folks, but for others it can take a few days longer. Relax, drink a lot of water, and keep making good choices. And do your best to earn sympathy and support from friends and family,
– www.whole30.com

And even though I’m feeling like the only thing I should do is sleep right now, let me tell you how excited I am that my meals are turning out great. That’s like the bright side to this nasty food hangover. The meals from Weeknight Paleo by Amber Beam are tasty and aren’t taking up much of my time. And no, I’m not getting compensated for plugging this book! LOL I WISH! Seriously though, the meals are great. And a success among all of my family… ages 10-29! Hehe.

agefotostock_rm_photo_of_woman_jaw_pain

I still am struggling with eating breakfast after my Post Workout Meal. And I fear that I always will. I have a good time frame of 1 1/2 – 2 hours after my PWO and it’s still so hard. It’s like I don’t want to chew. And part of Whole30’s thought process tells you to not drink shakes/smoothies! Chew your food! UGH! My face hurts!

Day TWO Everything
I decided to just give you all a run down of the day instead of splitting it all up! Maybe this will be better and less boring. I hope. Maybe. Don’t leave me! 😀

You should have already seen my beautiful breakfast in yesterday’s post and I only described Lunch. Got home, hit the BOOM Box and reheated some pork for the Carnitas–Style Taco Tower. But also remembered I had Salmon I did not throw in the freezer and needed to cook that ASAP. Turned out lovely, just lovely!

BOOM Box 1/714
30 heavy Russian Swings
Used the 1.5 POOD. Not fun, but did the work

Skill: Pull Up progressions
So Coach wanted us working on the Rings! Ugh, me and rings. I have dumb fears, Hanging from those is another one of them. But I almost got Toes to Bar on those. Just need to practice.

1/7/14 WOD

1/7/14 WOD

MetCon: 8 rounds for reps of 1 min Over Head Lunges w/plate 45/35 and 1 min Burpees to the plate
Ya, I knew this was gonna hurt! I wasn’t sure how the OVER HEAD part was going to work with my wrist and well I learned real quick it wasn’t going to work. I did about 10 reps with the 35lb plate but my wrist won’t bend all the way, so I was off balance. I tried going to a 25lb plate and it was still a NO GO. So I just did lunges. I felt bad I was scaling way bad. But I totally sucked without weight too! The burpees got me. BAD. Final: 214 reps.

DINNER
So I said I came home to reheat some pork. I made the Cole Slaw that goes with it the night before. SUPER EASY. And I improvised on the “tower” part. I didn’t purchase the metal ring thing that was suggested. But I had this handy dandy cup/measure thing that I used to attempt a tower. As you will see in the pictures, it came out OK, nothing restaurant worthy but I just want to eat!

My contraption, nothing like what the cookbook asks for!

My contraption, nothing like what the cookbook asks for!

Hehe, my LEANING Carnitas tower! May not be purty but it sure is tasty!

Hehe, my LEANING Carnitas tower! May not be purty but it sure is tasty!

And what the cookbook shows! Weeknight Paleo

And what the cookbook shows! (Weeknight Paleo) As you can see I was a little heavy handed with the guacamole in the pic above!

In between reheating and trying to create a masterpiece, I cooked up the Salmon for the Herbes de Provence-Crusted Salmon with a Citrus-Herb Sauce and Asparagus in Weeknight Paleo. Besides the “juicing” of the citrus fruit, this was quick and easy. Maybe 20 minutes from start to finish. Seriously EASY and QUICK and kind of fancy looking! So yummy!

Fresh out of the oven.

Fresh out of the oven.

My attempt at making it more presentable.

My attempt at making it more presentable.

SLEEP
Working out in the evenings makes it a little harder to sleep but once I did fall asleep I was out! I woke up fine when my alarm went off at 4 am but ended up hitting snooze till 4:35! Doh!

Day THREE
So I rolled in a few minutes late to the BOOM Box…. you can’t fault me for that when I’m showing up at 5 a.m.! Coach T already has his wheels turning on what I would be substituting for the WOD. Cause it was Thrusters and Hang Cleans on the board.

Midline: 30 evil wheels
With my wrist and lack of core strength I could only roll out so far, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t putting a beating on me!

Strength: EMOM 20min 3 thrusters AHAP. Once you have past 5 minutes you must keep that weight.
I am soooo glad I can’t do Thrusters with a BAR! They are misery! But I did get the opportunity to use 20lb Dumbbells. Of course the weight wasn’t there but I’m still working up my upper body strength since it’s been slow rolling. Still sweating and still a good heart rate.

1/8/14 WOD

1/8/14 WOD

MetCon: TABATA of Air Squats, Hang Cleans 115/75, C2B Pull Ups
Sometimes I love TABATA and sometimes, like today, I don’t care so much for it. Maybe cause I was already feeling drained after the Evil Wheels. So tired! 3-2-1 GO. I started off OK with Air Squats getting 20 in the first 20 seconds, then 16, then 14, then 12… I stayed at 12. Instead of Hang Cleans, I did Power Snatch with the 35lb bar. I did like 7 on the first 20 seconds, then held out with 5 for the rest of the time. By the time I got to my BANDED Pull Ups, I was just happy to be alive. I struggled a lot and ended up with a score of 2! Boooo! Final: 12, 5, 2

PWO MEAL
A serving of pork and a serving of Sweet Potato Puree. As exhausted as I felt, the food was good and went down easy. But as soon as I got home, I was already dreading breakfast!

BREAKFAST
Bone Broth! I’ve made the broth before but with less chicken carcasses and only used it for soups and seasoning veggies. But now I’ve made it properly and now I know that drinking it by itself is beautiful. And knowing all the health benefits makes it that much more the reason to drink it! Click HERE for more info!

I also had boiled some Eggs on Sunday, so this was going to be my breakfast. I was moving slower than normal and was glad I had this back up for food. I packed 3 eggs up, a sandwich bag full of spinach and a handful of cherry tomatoes. I figured I would eat this around 7:45 a.m. on my drive in to work. OH MY the spinach was so hard to eat as well as the EGGS. I was tired of eating that I failed to eat one of the eggs. I realized I was missing my “healthy” fat also but was so over it. I think/hope I’ll survive till lunch!

That’s a Wrap!
So there you have it for this lovely HUMP DAY. I’ll have REST until Friday morning! How sweet it is! This gives me time to cook up some chicken and ground beefs to hold me through Friday and maybe through the WEEKEND. I’ll be checking in tomorrow, hoping I’m not sooo tired and let you know how any food prep went down. Until then, take that step to cleaner eating, more physical activity or just getting more sleep! Do Something! Make a Change!

Where do I begin?

pig man

First off HI! And secondly, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Thirdly, I KNOW, it’s been a while, I’m sorry. Can I do a fourthly? Is there such a thing? Fourthly, my last post was NOV. 14th. I suck. at. life.

So I know I need to get my booty in gear. I’ve had some great “calling me out” moments on Facebook from my BOOM Boxmates. Thanks guys. It’s bittersweet. I love that there’s that outside push but I feel even worse when I don’t show up. But please continue to movitivate. I need it. But there’s nothing like a brother to look you in the face and say the last time I saw you, you were a lot smaller! Uh, Thanks Bro. My brother and I aren’t super close and I probably haven’t seen him since before summer, or early summer. BUT we do get along and you wouldn’t know we don’t see each other often. Clearly he feels comfortable enough to tell me I’m a chunky monkey! Ya, ya, same song, different day. I’ve declared December my slow ramp up into the new year. I’m not making any grand promises. But hopefully by January I will have the best mindset to start fresh to eat cleaner and kick ass.

CrossFit Boom Ladies Night Out
During my 19 day break, I did manage to make it to the Ladies night even on Nov. 22. We had a great time, although I think coach was secretly trying to kill us!

ladiesnight

Partner WOD:
200 air squats, 200 push ups. Start at one end of the gym and do 10 push ups. Lunge to other end of gym and do 10 air squats. Rinse and repeat. The LUNGES were the killer in this WOD. Seriously. I think we figured out we did about 200 or more lunges in addition to the squats and push ups. My poor partner Nicole, had ME, the lazy bum. She put up with me thank goodness. I can’t do push ups cause my wrist is still a bum deal, so I had to push ups with my fists. Thankfully coach let me get away with using my knees. I tell you, my poor knuckles were taking a beating.

Dinner:
After a little bit of recovery, the majority of the ladies went to BFF Bistro and Bakery. If you’re local and like Asian fusion food then you should definitely check this place out. All the food looked great. I DID NOT EAT PALEO but they have a lot of protein dishes. I’m sure they would accommodate any food needs.

Overall, it was a great time hanging with the girls from the box. We are all so spread out so we don’t get to see each other much. Hopefully we make this more of a regular event. If your box doesn’t already have social events, I suggest you guys at least try every now and then. It’s fun to do stuff outside the box with like minded folks, especially after a grueling workout!

Thanksgiving
I stuffed my face and watched football.

Today
12/4/13 WOD
Let me just say ALL OF MY STRENGTH IS GONE!

Skill: 10 min practice Kipping T2B
I could barely hang on the bar just to work on kipping with no extra movements! I surely can’t to a Toes To Bar now. It was pure torture on my hands :/

704462-4543728-LiftSpongebob

Strength: 8 min EMOM 2 power cleans at BW
I still can’t do any bar movements involving my wrists. So Deadlifts it was. And that f’ing bar hurt my hands too. And what’s worse is that pulling 165lbs off the ground didn’t come easy! That’s 80 freaking pounds lighter than my MAX and it was HARD! It’s so depressing on how fast you can lose your strength. I know it will come back quickly but it’s depressing to say the least. That’s what I get for not showing. I should have a 260lb Deadlift if I was showing up consistently!

12/4/13 WOD

12/4/13 WOD

MeCon: Partner wod Death by Burpees reps go up by 2 each round. Only one person working at a time.
Ugh, burpees. Boooo. So I still did burpees, just fisted up my right hand but let my lay flat on the ground. I know most of you know by know what Death by (fill in the blank) means but here it goes again for you newbies. In today’s workout we will do 2 burpees on the first minute, 4 on minute 2, 6 on minute 3. We’ll continue to add two reps to every minute. When you can’t complete the reps for that minute you are done. And your last completed round is your score. My partner today was Myrna, she’s new and was in the elements class, but Coach had her come in to do the MetCon with us. She was a trooper this morning and busted out some burpees. When we got to six reps, we just split up the work. She would do 3 then I would do 3, next minute, I did 4, she did 4, etc… We were two reps short to finish our 9th minute. So we ended up with 16. Not too bad for a new girl and a gimpy girl.

Sigh.
I’m hoping by January my wrist will be a rockin and a rollin. The 5am Tues/Thurs classes got cut for December and I can’t make Thurs nights, soooo, I’ll be back at it on Friday. Sadly, you may not here from me again until Monday. It’s ok, dry your eye. But if I get the chance I’ll post on Friday. Other than that, it did feel good to get a workout in this morning. I’m so much more alert and it feels great! Happy Hump Day! I know nobody has been telling you to be AWESOME lately. So what are you waiting for? Go be AWESOME!!!

Love/Hate CrossFit

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve read articles bashing CrossFit and articles praising CrossFit. And everything in between.

images

I’m pretty sure a lot of the CrossFit haters have never even attended an event or walked into a box. And maybe the few that have ran with the wrong folks. But on the flipside a lot of the CrossFit die hards are badass mofo’s that are so elite, I can only wish to be like them. They are those beautiful bodied people. The kind of people that belong in magazines. They are never average joe’s such as myself – With lots of flaws and lots of weaknesses. A few months ago, I wrote a post on Why I (still) CrossFit. I wish I was more “popular” in the blog world because I think my experience and who I am caters more to the AVERAGE person who is just looking for an active and healthy lifestyle but may never grace the covers of magazines.

index

Truly, if you need/want a great EVERYTHING workout and you want a supportive community then CrossFit is something you should check out. There are lots of people out there with goals and a group is out there for every walk of life, but I really believe that the community I have found is one that is solid and that keeps growing. You can have so many different types of people connect on the same level even if you aren’t on the same physical level. Sure you’re gonna see silliness and sure you may see some instances of absolute ridiculousness, but as a competent human being you should be able to discern good coaching over poor coaching. Click here for what you should look for in a good box.

If the group thing isn’t your cup of tea, you can do CrossFit anywhere. But for me, I like sharing my success and failures with those who are learning and growing with me. Some folks have flown right by me, but are still there in support, cheering on to the last rep and some folks commiserate with me as we work towards our sometimes lofty goals.

images2

Regardless of what our goals are, or where you are at on your health journey, I believe that you gotta do something that works for you. But if you’re gonna bash CrossFit, you better have participated. And if you’ve read someone’s love for CrossFit but are intimidated because they have beyond the 6 pack abs, just know it’s not all about outrageous workouts or insanely perfect people. There’s a lot of people similar to me. The girl next door. Or in my case the mom next door.

11/13 – 11/14 WODs
My body hates me, For real! Everything hurts. I told myself on Tuesday when I finally hit up the BOOM Box after a tiny hiatus that I would go Tu/Th and then baby step my way back into everything. I’m still a wounded birdy so I’m still limited. But by last night, I was so achy that I knew I had to WORK the soreness out. I was glad I did but I wasn’t sure if my bed would keep me hostage or if I would be able to walk this morning. I set my alarm anyways. Barely by the hair on my chiny chin chin did I make it in. Only to find out I’d be the lone ranger today.

It’s been cold in the mornings and it takes a while to get these old bones ready to go. My ankles, hips and shoulders are sooooo tight. And well everything else is sore.

11/13/13
Strength: Max distance sled pull in 30 seconds x3 3plates/2plates
Well it was still cold at 7pm but probably not near as cold as 5am! I have never like sled pushes, sled pulls, sled anything! And as refreshing as cool air can be, it can also burn your lungs. Whew it was bittersweet. In 30 seconds, my first and best run was for 220 yds. After that I got close but my butt was on fire! That pretty much felt like that was all the workout I needed. Time to go home.

11/13/13 WOD

11/13/13 WOD

MetCon: 3 min EMOM of 5 Box Jumps, 10 Push Ups, 15 Air Squats; 5 min EMOM 2 Power Cleans 225/135; 3 min EMOM 5 Box Jumps, 10 Push Ups, 15 Air Squats
But we had 11 whole minutes more of MetCon to complete. While 11 minutes doesn’t sound like a long time, why don’t you do the above work. I was barely finishing the reps in the minute. I’d get 5-10 seconds of rest and then bam, start again. No I can’t do Push Ups right now so I did Hollow Rocks. And to substitute for Power Cleans, I did Deadlifts. I completed all my rounds, but some of them were too close for comfort.

11/14/13
Lone ranger this morning! Boooooo! Who knows I may have had the best time. Ok really, I know I didn’t but one can hope.

Midline: 30 evil wheels
Not knowing what my wrist is capable of is scary. Just nerve-racking. I realized I could do 30 evil wheels, damn it! My abs will be dead in the morning.

Strength: Strict Press 5,5,5
This a no go so I did rows. I didn’t do too much weight. Started at 65lbs and ended at 80lbs. It did feel good to work my back vs. LEGS. Even though squatting is the best and deadlifting is nice… sometimes the lower body needs a break!

11/14/13 WOD

11/14/13 WOD

MetCon: 5 rounds of 10 Burpees, 20 Lunges and 25 Double Unders
Ya, not bad for 1 round. 5 rounds is a different story. Remember folks you want to kill this workout As Fast As Possible. To substitute for Burpees I did GHD situps. I thought the time it would take to get up and down from the GHD would hinder me, but who am I kidding, Burpees would hinder me just as much. The lunges were killer. Halfway through each round, my hips would just ignite and burn soooo bad. I just had to chip away and put that pain elsewhere. DUs weren’t too bad. I’d be so close to getting unbroken each time but would trip up close to 20. Doh! So frustrating. Time: 9:26

The End
That’s a little bit of everything don’t ya think? It’s almost the weekend y’all. Smile and be happy! Get active, eat clean, sleep and as always be AWESOME!

Cindy Cindy Bo Bindy

index

Banana Fana Fo Findy, Fe Fi Mo Mindy, Ciiiindy! It’s official, I have certified myself into dorkiness forever. But that was seriously in my head this morning. And guess why? CINDY! I love to hate this workout and hate to enjoy it. Let’s be clear there is no REAL LOVE for this dirty girl.

Test day: Cindy 20 min AMRAP of 5 Pull-ups mod:ring rows, 10 Push Ups, 15 Air Squats; Rest 7 minutes then 3 min max MU or plank hold as long as possible for non muscle uppers!

So in the past I have done OK and I have done CRAPPY. Today was the best though really modified. I had a green band and a small blue band. NOT GOOD! But I was able to stay consistent, still get work done and not hang on the bar for FOREVER. Push Ups were strong for a bit. My palm/wrist started plaguing me so I went to KNEE PUSH UPS! I haven’t resorted to those in a very very long time. But I wasn’t going to risk hurting my wrist more. And then Air Squats. This is a movement where some rounds I just breezed right through and some rounds felt like I would never finish. They are easy but I sure do like to stand around a lot when we do them 😀 And for the first time, when it comes to Pull Ups at least, instead of letting the clock run down when there’s like 15 seconds to go, I actually got back up there and put 3 additional Pull Ups on the board. Who is this girl? Final: 13 rounds + 3 Pull Ups.

10/11/13 WOD

10/11/13 WOD

After we tried killing ourselves in 20 minutes we got a 7 minute break. Then it was a 3 minute Muscle Up show. So you all should know by now I’m not cool enough to have a MU so a nice plank hold was waiting for me. My shoulders are kaput so it was hard to even hold a minute but I did, then I dropped, then I got back up. I had a total of 2 minutes combined. But my longest hold was the first minute. I. NEED. NEW. SHOULDERS.

It’s the WEEKEND!
Can I get an ANTI-RAIN dance? WE have more baseball and we’d really like to just play some ball. The rain ruins such things. I know we need it but can it come on Monday, please! And as I just mentioned B4B happens tomorrow! I’m excited and you should be too! Other than that, I hope you all have a beautiful weekend and just be AWESOME!

Me vs. Me

images3

It’s really hard to find that extra BURST of energy at 5 a.m. during a WOD. My brain is still not fully functioning. My body is still super achy. My joints, tendons and ligaments are resisting any warm ups or mobility. It’s so much different than doing an evening WOD. So where in the heck do I find that EXTRA that I need to force myself through a workout. To go that extra rep? It’s a total mind game, I know. But it’s rare my mind comes to terms with my body or vice versa.

images2

I know that everyone has their own mental battles. It could be the choice of the couch over a brisk walk. It could be that decision to get rid of all your junk food and only have healthy food in your home. It could be debating on if you make the vote for the WHOLE family to move over to eating clean or keep those treats for your kiddos. Those battles plague us all. Easy vs. Difficult. Quick vs. Effort.

index

I’ve already made the decision for health, now my decisions in my workouts are: HOW MUCH MORE CAN I GO? What kind of gains do I want? What kind of progress do I want? These battles are just as hard as making the initial decision to get fit and healthy. Even though I KNOW I can win the battle, I am struggling! But I do know I gotta keep at it.

images4

So I hope to encourage, you, or whoever that you gotta just keeping at it. Even when you veer off, just veer back on. Persistence is key to success. Remember it’s not a sprint. It’s a process that is different for everyone. Last week I gave some quick baby steps to get closer to good health. Once you are comfortable with those, you need to find the motivation and drive to push even more. Just don’t quit!

Endurance: Row 4x500m (rest a couple of minutes between rows)
I keep hoping that I will get better at rowing and I’m feeling confident that I am slowly getting better. I’m still slow but now that I’m actually feeling more comfortable I know the speed will come later. At least I hope. My short, chunk legs may say otherwise. I’m 5’2. It is not easy to be GREAT at rowing. I averaged about a 2:10 500m. I think the quickest pace I hit for today was 2:05. In the past I’ve hit paces under 2min but this morning was a definite struggle. I did, however, stay consistent!

10/3/13 WOD

10/3/13 WOD

MetCon: 5 x 3 min AMRAPS of 3 Power Clean (135/95), 6 Pushups, 9 Squats. Rest 1 min between rounds.
I did not want to do this workout. The simpler movements are misleading to the EASE of the workout. The Power Cleans were few but a heavier weight. At this very moment I can’t remember my max but it’s probably 115 and maybe less. My first round was 30 seconds. And after that I fell apart fast. Coach T gave us a goal of trying to hit 3 rounds for every 3 minutes. That was a good goal but after the first 3 minutes, I wasn’t sure I could hit it everytime. I was just slow and tired. And that “fight” that I was looking for was still at home sleeping. I dragged ass and I’m disappointed in myself for doing so. Final: 14 rounds + 1 Power Clean.

Barbells For Boobs
I’m to the point of downright begging folks. And maybe BRIBING! Let me take stock of how many pairs of AWESOME socks I have left. I’ll get back to you tomorrow or first thing next week. But I’m thinking some form of donation to my fundraising page could get you some socks. I’ll have details later if it’s feasible.

BFB-WHITE-02

I’m STILL only halfway to my $100 goal and BOOM for BOOBS is 9 days away. Just in case you are new to the blog, I will let you know I am fundraising for a group called Barbells for Boobs. My box, CrossFit Boom, is hosting an event to raise money and awareness for the B4B cause. We will be doing “GRACE” for the workout. That is 30 clean and jerks for time. We will be rocking out the PINK colors. And we will be having a great time. Any donation would be fantastic! $1, $5, $10… anything! Please click here: HELP SAVE BOOBIES!

The End
I hope everyone is getting along nicely this week. I hope you are doing something new or different to be a healthier, fitter you. Remember, we all have struggles. Don’t give in. And if you do, pick yourself up and get back to it. Hey, I promise it will make you more AWESOME!

Obsessed, Insanity or Just a Healthy Addiction

index

This morning my two alarms went off and I hit snooze on both of them twice…. I KNOW I KNOW, not good for the brain and body! Let me just say that the inventor of SNOOZE is evil! But I digress. It was time to wake up and as I plopped out of bed, my every fiber was aching. Now was a good time to crawl back under the covers. This urge to stay in bed is the constant battle I have. When the cold hits, it will be an even bigger battle. I know I’m not alone. Early Birders you have to agree that your comfy bed is begging you to sleep just a lil longer.

motivational-fitness-workout-quotes-36

So I make the choice to walk to my sink. I brush my teeth and put my hair up. I walk to my dresser to get my clothes and stand there. I think again about how much every muscle is sore and drained. I think again of crawling back into bed. I debate on how much more sleep I will actually get if I just lay back down. I may have fallen asleep standing up because I stood there for what felt like a rather long time. I’m sure it was less than a minute but it felt like 10 minutes. I had to convince myself that I was halfway to being ready. Don’t ruin it. Plus I’m in that darn Work Weight Loss comp and I need to stay focused. I also will regret not working out all day. I dressed and drove my tired ass to the Boom Box.

tumblr_mc3txzwaqp1qd45ayo1_1280

So I ask myself. Am I obsessed, insane or is this considered a “healthy” addiction. A health addict. Probably a little bit of everything to be honest. I know not every CrossFitter is all of the above. I know the term “addict” is deemed as negative but in this instance as long as I’m not hurting myself (which I’m not) I do believe you can say you have a healthy addiction. I’m pretty sure there are several Boom Boxers who take it as a workout and move on. But there are quite a few of us who might go into withdrawals if MIA for too long. In general though, whether I drink the kool-aid or not, I would be striving to a healthier me. I have just found that CrossFit fits my needs the best in many aspects. And I’d rather have a workout addiction than any other kind.

End Ramble.

9/25/13 WOD
Midline: 30 evil wheels
Evil is correct. Especially when my ABS are still fried from Friday! Doh! Below is kind of what they look like. Just like the handy dandy AB WHEEL but with a barbell. Roll out to preferably a plank position and roll back in. I probably didn’t even get halfway to a plank position.

maxresdefault

Skill: Handstand Push Ups
Ugh. I used to be close to having these. I even had a handful of kipping HSPUs. But I know my recent weight gain has hindered me. I really have hopeful thoughts that when I shed some pounds I will be closer to mastering the HSPU.

MetCon: TABATA: Row (for calories), HSPU, Bottom to Bottom Airsquats and Strict Press 45/35
TABATA can SUCK IT TOO! For those who don’t know, TABATA is taking a movement and doing said movement for 20 seconds. You then rest 10 seconds. Alternate between work and rest for 8 rounds (4minutes). The idea is to go HARD for 20 seconds, since I know you folks who haven’t participated in such a ‘simple” workout are probably saying how can that be hard. There are different ways to score your TABATA. You can score by adding up all reps. Or you score, like we did today, by using your lowest rep count as your score. So if you start of strong with 10 reps but by round 8 are only doing 5 reps, then your score is 5. Not fun!

9/25/13 WOD

9/25/13 WOD

The rowing was nice, I did well, for me at least. But only managing 4 calories each round. At least I stayed consistent. WE then moved onto HSPU. Well I used a box for assistance and only managed to stick with 6. These were a beating but not the beating the Air Squats delivered. I started off with 12 air squats. My hips were achy already and this just killed them. Sitting in the bottom of the squat for our “rest” was nice for the first 2 rounds then it just become misery. I went from 12 to finishing with 5. Womp Womp! Then came Strict Press. The shoulders are dead from HSPU but it’s a light weight 35lbs. So how come it felt like 90lbs?!? I stuck with 8 reps through 6 of the rounds but finished with 7 reps. :/ Everything added up = 22reps. Booo. Hissss.

Barbells For Boobs
Time is ticking. Boom for Boobs will be here 2 1/2 weeks! Yikes, I don’t think I’m ready! But I’m doing it regardless. MY biggest fear is that I won’t beat my current RX Grace time! How sad is that? It’s a workout for FUN! And it’s a workout to support B4B. But my competitive side doesn’t want to fail. It still will be fun and all the fundraising goes to a great cause.

If you’d like to support the B4B organization, please go to my fundraising page HELP SAVE BOOBIES and donate. My goal is $100 and I’m halfway there.

BFB-WHITE-02

Also, if you want to participate with us at the BOOM Box you are welcome. Even if you just want to spectate then come on out. The workout will be Grace (30 clean and jerks). Everyone is welcome to join in. It’s at 9am on Saturday Oct 12th.

The End.
That’s a wrap folks. I need a driver to to safely drive me home from work so I can nap. Any volunteers? Hehe. I know that’s a little far fetched, but I’m sleepy! Make today great and don’t forget to be awesome!

Focus

gameface

It’s time for me to put my game face on and focus on my eating habits. It’s time for me to put away the excuses and get back to clean eating. I’m considering competing in a competition in December. A LONG ways a way right now (even though I’ll blink and it will be here), but registration is in a month. So I need to get my shit together mentally and physically, NOW, so that I won’t feel all bleh and icky about actually signing up in October. From there I have 2 months to focus even more. So FOCUS is my primary thought in all things food. I know it will be a struggle because I’ve dug such a deep hole. And I know I won’t be perfect, but I gotta get pretty darn close!

9/2/13 HOTSHOTS 19 MEMORIAL WOD

Nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighting team tragically lost their lives on June 30, 2013 while fighting a fire in Yarnell, AZ.

If you aren’t of the CrossFit world you wouldn’t know that there are HERO WODS. These workouts are designed to serve as an “in memory” of fallen heroes. They are tough, grueling and sometimes damn near impossible to complete. The Hero WODs from CrossFit are named after heroes who have given their lives in the line of duty. Their purpose is to remind us to think outside of ourselves.

The HOTSHOTS WOD was and is a fundraiser to help support the families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots crew. On Aug. 31, a huge event went down in Prescott, AZ. Many Elite Athletes showed up. The CrossFit Community in general showed up. It was an amazing thing to watch. If you are able to donate then you can do so here: https://hotshots19.crossfit.com/

IMAGE-REMEMBER-070513

We at CrossFit Boom along with many other Boxes nationwide went on to tackle the HOTSHOTS 19 MEMORIAL WOD for this past Labor Day.

Six rounds for time of:
30 Squats
135 pound Power clean, 19 reps
7 Strict Pull-ups
Run 400 meters

To be honest when I see HERO WODs I run for the hills. The workouts tend to be well over 30 minutes, often times up to an hour long. And even though I know the purpose to DO and REMEMBER, I just see PAIN. But I wasn’t going to run away from the workout! Plus it was a day off from work so I could roll in for the 9 a.m. class, which is quite nice. Way better than 5 a.m.

9/2/13 HOTSHOTS 19 MEMORIAL WOD

9/2/13 HOTSHOTS 19 MEMORIAL WOD

I opted for the 85lbs Power Cleans, which I knew would get heavy halfway through, but once I committed, I was committed. I started off great. All up until the RUN. And runs walks were slow. This is where most of my time was eaten up. Every round I moved fairly well from squats to power cleans to pull ups (banded). I did all 30 airsquats for the first two rounds, but broke them up into 10’s or 15’s for the last 4 rounds. I started off in small sets for the Power Cleans, but picked up the pace the further along I got. Not sure how that actually worked for me but it did. By the last rounds I was doing 8 and 9 Unbroken before opting for smaller sets. It was the 400’s that were at a snail pace! It was bad. We only had 45 minutes of class time to complete the workout. I knew that wasn’t going to happen. There wasn’t a class afterwards, so Coach let me finish my final round. Time: 56:06

Hopefully the FOCUS on eating better will allow me to lean out, which in turn will lighten me up, which will then lead to better run times. HOPEFULLY!

9/3/13
And it’s back to the “get up before the suns up” workouts. I’m still sticking with my theory that the bars are heavier in the MORNING!

Strength: Back Squats 5@60% 3@70% 2@80% 2@90% 1@95% 1@103%
Whoa nelly! 103% That is an auto PR if I hit it. I have never seen over 100% on the board. I know I’ve been feeling strong and I know that I’ve been wanting a new 1RM and today would be the day. It was only 5lbs but it was 5lbs more than I’ve ever done. NEW 1RM at 170lbs! So it was nice. But after that 1 REP, I lost the desire to really test my 1RM. It was HEAVY this morning!

9/3/13 WOD

9/3/13 WOD

MetCon: For Time 15 Wall Walks, 10 T2B, 5 MU, 10 T2B, 15 Wall Walks
Oh how my brain deceived me, I thought it said WALL BALLS. And if you KNOW me at all… I would never want to do wall balls. But I’d rather throw a damn med ball than do a freakin wall walk. They make me dizzy. They are dumb and well they are dumb.

I haven’t had to do wall walks in my fluffy state, so they were even more miserable than I remembered. UGH! Needless to say it took for ever to do the first 15 and it took even more forever to do the last 15. I did Knees to Elbows instead of Toes To Bar. And I did 15 Banded Pull Ups instead of the 5 MU. Time: HORRIBLE 14:42. My shoulders hate me.

That’s all I got for y’all for this HOT HOT TEXAS TUESDAY. If you are like me and need to get back on the clean eating train… then let’s do this! Start today, start tomorrow,…. just start this week. OK? GREAT! Make today AWESOME!

Bread does a Body Bad

Bad for Health

It’s true even though I love the bread along with the rest of America. I always have been a bread and pastry junky. When I first went Paleo and was 100% committed I cut it all out. I lost weight, felt great and was doing just fine but those little mental temptations would get me and I’d struggle to get back on track. Needless to say if you know what’s going on with me you KNOW I’m not eating all the awesomely the past few months. I still manage to get good breakfasts and good lunches. It’s the dinners and weekends that sometimes are off … and sometimes WAY OFF.

Yesterday was one of those OFF days and this morning I could feel it in every joint. My wrists, my ankles, my shoulders. Those were the worst. I can honestly say when I go off the rails it physically pains me. And my brain is foggier than normal.

skeleton-pain-copy

I’m not trying to sell you a book or make you dive into CrossFit. I’m telling you from real day to day experience that BREAD, WHEAT, GRAINS = HURT. Processed food generally = HURT and when I eat enough of it, I just deal with it and unfortunately you allow yourself to get used to feeling like crap. And I never realized they hurt me until I cut everything out and did a reboot. Clearly, the reboot was not a PERMANENT in my situation :/ but I have had many phases of eating clean and cutting out the junk. And it never fails that the BREAD gets me. I’m not so bad with the dairy. I’m not so bad with some grains like RICE. It is clear without a doubt that anything with wheat will get me. It sucks. Sure I can splurge and love every bite, but I pay for it. Yes life is short and we all should enjoy it. But shouldn’t we also enjoy it pain free? I think so. Life can be enjoyable without BREADS. I promise it can. I just have to keep reminding myself that it’s true!

But enough of my BREAD is BAD for you. I know you just want to know my success and failures at the BOOM Box! Right?!? Hahah!

Community WOD 8/24/13
Ya, I’ve been hesitant lately because so many of the Community get togethers involve running! And teams! I don’t mind teams at all. But I do mind running and being on a team. I’m sure to let EVERYONE down. And it doesn’t motivate me to push harder in the running dept. The team just loses ground due to my loserness. But this past Saturday there was Deadlifts and Yoke Pushes. There was a little bit of UH OH in me because we had 30 minutes to get As HEAVY as POSSIBLE. Well I wasn’t mentally prepared to go HEAVY. Coach is talking 1RM PRs. I’m thinking 185lbs for 5 reps felt super heavy not too long ago. So we had 30 minutes to work. As long as we were doing more than 1 rep, we could continue moving up in weight. But once we got to singles we had to AS A TEAM push the YOKE a long ass way. I’m sure it was less than 100 yds but it was still far and we sprinted that thing across. I was smoked. But we still had more time to do Deadlifts. Due to some mental fatigue, I accidentally pulled 235lbs off the ground “thinking” I was only pulling 225lbs, which is my current 1RM. Well HOT DAMN, new PR! And I still had more in me, I think, after the YOKE, ugh I hope so. Guess what? I had another 10 lb PR. 245lbs! I did try at 250 but I was out of it mentally for sure by then. 250lbs could have been only 200 and I still probably wouldn’t have been able to pull it. I’m happy with a 20lb PR though! Woooo!

Strength Motivational

8/26/13 WOD
Strength: Back squats 5@60% 3@70% 2@80% 2@90% 1@95%
No I didn’t make it to the 5am class. Boooo! First day of school for my kiddos and well my BODY was not moving from the bed. It is what it is! I did manage to get myself to the 7pm though and I was feeling great with the squats. Really great!

8/26/13 WOD

8/26/13 WOD

MetCon: 3 rounds 1 min max reps Air-squats, Ring Dips, Strict Pull Ups, NO REST. Then 100 hollow rocks
Then we have the MetCon and all the greatness fades away into holy crap this is gonna suck. Thank the baby Jesus that Air Squats were in there or my total reps would probably be 10. Ok maybe 12. My only hope to get a decent number in the next 9 minutes was to absolutely KILL the air squats. Because my Ring Dips are puny and my STRICT PULL UPs are worse than ever! I think the most Pull Ups I completed (with bands) was like 4. Granted the Pull Ups were the 3rd minute, so I was smoked from Ring Dips but I didn’t manage to do hundreds of those. I probably hit 20, 15 and 12 .. and that’s guessing because 2 days later I really can’t remember. Total Reps: 172. Once we regained some composure, we had to do 100 Hollow Rocks. I typically don’t mind these but today they were no fun. At about 80, I was cramping on my side. It felt like I cracked a RIB and of course I had to act like I actually did crack a rib. It was painful. The next 20 were miserable. I was miserable. The End!

Strength Motivational

8/28/13 WOD
And I made the earlybird class. Go me!
Skill: Pistols/Handstand Push Ups 20 minutes
But it’s a no go on Pistols and HSPU. But I put in enough work to already be drenched in sweat. ONE DAY. A day where I’m a little less fluffy for the HSPU but ONE DAY soon!

MetCon: 10 rounds of 30 Double Unders and 8 Power Cleans 115/80 Time Cap: 20 minutes
You ever walk into a WOD knowing that this is your bag? You got this! Superpowers and Fave Barbell movement. I’m in. This is easy! Ya, not so EASY today for me. Maybe it was the pizza at lunch or maybe it was the Chic-fil-a for dinner. Ya I’m pretty sure it was both! And the 5 hours of sleep I had. Go ME!

8/28/13 WOD

8/28/13 WOD

I started off strong with DUs. Then moved to Cleans and I’m thinking I’ll go UNBROKEN as long as I can until I got to 4, then I dropped the bar, rested and finished the other 4. DUs still ok for round 2 and I chugged along the same on the Cleans. It all became foggy and breathless for me after that. Somewhere between round 2 and round 8, I started doing 10 Power Cleans! I only realize this cause Coach asked me where I was at while I was hunched over, hands on knees and dying. I said I have 6 reps completed for the Cleans and he says 2 to go? And I say no 4. And he says out of 8? And I GO OH SHIT I’ve been doing 10 reps. So I have no clue where I went astray but for round 8, 9, 10 I KNOW I only did the 8 reps. Also toward the end I found some consistency in my DUs, which I needed badly. Time: MUCH LONGER THAN I MENTALLY anticipated: 17:50 RX

Lesson of the Day: Don’t eat a spicy chicken sandwich with pepperjack cheese, large fries and large sweet tea 6 hours before you have to do a 10round WOD with Double Unders and Power Cleans!

This was my first 5am for this week. Monday was lazy andTues/Thurs don’t go LIVE for 5am till next week. It’s been a nice baby stepped process for me to get back to the grind. Hopefully next week, I’ll be able to feel comfortable at getting up so early regularly.

It’s HUMP Day and I think from here on till forever I will always have the Geico Camel Hump Day Commerical in my head. Have a super duper Wednesday and don’t forget to be AWESOME!
