As you all know I’m trying to get back to my consistent workouts and slowly but surely I am getting there. (Too bad my blogging is still struggling, but I’m working on that too!) The biggest thing I’ve struggled with though is getting back to the EARLY MORNING workouts. I used to be so good. Getting up and getting to the box at 5 am was a no brainer. Just get up and go. Then I got lazy and chunky and sleep just sounded so much better.

Then there’s the evenings… those are oh so nice. My brain and body are awake. I’m way more limber and it’s not as hard to get moving and warmed up. My performance may not be better but I feel better! It does, however suck up my whole evening. And well that’s no fun.

But I did finally show up at 5 am today and boy oh boy I feel GRAND! I have energy. I’m ready to go and tackle the day. And in truth, I know I’m more of a morning person. But as with anything, you fall out of routine and it’s hard to get back. Yes this morning, I was achy and groggy. But by the time I was done and showered up, I was all woooooo!

MetCon: 400 Total Reps AFAP – 1 minute at each station of Burpess, Step Ups, Jumping Air Squats and Walking Lunges.
You just keep rotation until you get your 400 reps in. Or die. Thankfully no one died but I sure did feel like it at various times. There’s not much to say except my hips were smoked. This was not a FUN workout :/ Time: 21:15

MetCon: 10 rounds of 6 Cleans and 3 Front Squats, every 90 seconds do 3 HSPU or 1 Wall Walk.
Boy do I love me some Cleans. And the wrist is getting better everyday so I was excited for this workout all except for the HSPU or Wall Walk part. My wrist can’t handle Wall Walks just yet so Coach had me do 6 ring dips (band assisted). So I was back to happy place. That was until about round 4. I was over Cleans, my wrist was getting fatigued and I thought crap I still have 6 more rounds. There’s no way. But I hung in there and just chipped away. Time: 13:12

Game: Wall Ball Bowling
Well this was different. There were plates ranging from 15lbs to 45lbs set up like pins but flat and a medball. We split up into teams and got to roll medball for two frames. Whatever plate our ball landed on determined what movement the other team had to do. So if you landed on 25, it was 25 Push Ups for the other team. 15 = Wall Balls, 25 = Push Ups, 35 = KB Swings and 45 = Sit Ups. Thankfully our opponents weren’t very good so we only had 1 round of Sit Ups and and 1 round of Push Ups! It was fun though.

MetCon: 3 Turns of 2 rounds of 10 Dumbbell Snatches and 250ft Sprint.
We were supposed to get timed but that didn’t happen so we just did 3 rounds of hell AFAP. Except my fast as possible sprint included a slow trot by the end. We had 40lb dumbbells and had to alternate 10 reps. I actually got better as the rounds went on when I wasn’t dying from the “trot”. But 40lbs is still heavy for me. This workout was pretty much evil. But still a good one.

Woooo I finally made a 5am class.

Skill: Snatch
It’s been a while and my whole body hurts from the week so I wasn’t sure how I’d do, but besides a few rusty warm ups, I got back into this movement pretty ok. Not perfect or anything, but good enough.

MetCon: “Isabel” 30 Snatches for time
Coach didn’t want us to go so heavy we lost form and even though I’ve hit 85lbs just a handful of times, I wasn’t prepared for 85lbs or even 75lbs. So I went with 65lbs. That ended up not being too bad. Coach didn’t want us going light and finishing under 3 minutes, but he didn’t really want us going over 6 minutes either. I busted out two sets of 5, then sets of 2 then singles. Time: 4:14

So like I said it was slow rolling. A grumbly stomach prevented from hitting the box up on Monday and an unexpected ER visit for one of my kiddos prevented me from going on Thursday. But all is well and I’m still eating tons better than I had been last month. So yay for small steps! It’s possible for all of you on the bubble. You can do it! There’s not one day that’s better than any other day to getting back on track. You just gotta do it! So whatever that is… eating clean, getting active or anything to a healthier life, you got this! Chugging Along – Whole30 Day EIGHT

I SURVIVED THE WEEKEND! WOOOHOOOO! The weekend is where I typically crumble. We got things to do; I don’t want to plan; And then I cave in for BAD FOODS. I don’t just cave though, I disappear into the bad food, junk food abyss. But this weekend, I was prepared. And I made it!

Day FIVE Lunch/Dinner
My meals were just a combo of leftovers. A little bit of matchstick salad. A little bit of salmon. A little bit of chicken. Nothing exciting or major.

Day SIX
I started off my morning trying out YOGA at the BOOM Box. I’ve dabbled in a class or two in my past but never got into it. It’s been several years since I’ve attempted anything yoga related. Boy oh boy, do I suck at this. But as I warmed up and understood the tempo and how things went along, I did get a little better. I realize how tight everything is when I’m trying to relax. Even so far as my cheek muscles didn’t want to give. It was beneficial to me and I hope to keep on attending as the classes pop up.

When I got home, I did a quick heat of some grassfed ground beef, onions, spinach, tomatoes and over medium eggs. Ate a handful of raw trail mix and out the door we went. Good thing we came home in time for me to eat lunch, but I did have hardboiled eggs, fruit and some salad packed up just in case home wasn’t an option! Instead I stir fried some leftover chicken, threw in some broccoli and a handful of coconut flakes and voila! Lunch. And dinner was pretty much the same. Heated up and finished up leftovers. Also had a nice mug of Bone Broth. I could be an addict. It’s sooo good.

Day SEVEN
One full week in Wooooo! Before we headed out to do our shopping for the day I had some eggs, broccoli, tomatoes and a clementine. I can’t remember what fat I had but it was probably coconut flakes.

I had my shopping list in hand ready to purchase foods for Week 2 of Weeknight Paleo. Ernie really really like the pork from last week. So instead of Steaks, we are going to redo pork and just make the sides that would go with the steaks. I’m excited for the menu because it has new things like turnips and celery root, both of which are foreign to me. When we got back home, I went straight into prep mode. I was a little less enthusiastic this time around. My head started pounding. My stomach wasn’t happy and I was not feeling the prep time. I still muddled through most of it before I took my lunch break.

I took leftover roast chicken, way too much onion, green apple and diced it all up. Then I threw in some paleo mayo (on the verge of expiring), and voila Chicken Salad. I also took some sweet potato slices and fried them up in some coconut oil for some chips. I probably could have thrown some kind of green veggie in there but I was dragging, starving and not feeling well all at the same time. Finished up some of the prep then took a NAP! I felt a little better when I woke up and waited for my Pork Roast to finish before I did anymore food prep.

By the evening I had all of my PWO meals made. I had emergency hard boiled eggs made. I had Pork to last us a couple of meals and a few other veggies chopped and ready to go.

Day EIGHT

Strength: Front Squats 4 sets 3 reps @ temp 103X1 (10 sec neg, 3 sec hold, fast up, 1 sec at top) without dropping 10 reps AFAP
I CAN FRONT RACK THE BAR! I CAN FRONT RACK THE BAR! But that is all. Now that I know can do this, I just need to work the movement regularly. My wrist is tight but not pained. When I added weight, well that’s a little scary. So I definitely need to work my way up slowly.

As for this tempo Front Squat, negatives and what not. It was hard on me today. My left shoulder was not on my side today. It was in pain and limited mobility. So after a few reps in, the frankensteining was taking a toll. I had a hard time holding the bar up. So even though I did try to stay on track, I just couldn’t. I still got work in, just not the kind of work Coach was wanting.

MetCon: 7 min AMRAP 5 HSPU 5 Clean & Jerks 135/95
For me it was Ring Push Ups and Dumbbell Clean & Jerks (25lb dumbbells). I never felt right doing the Ring Push Ups but my triceps and shoulders were on fire, so something was working. And for the Clean & Jerks, as I got through, they seemed to get easier. Just working overhead in general is a work in progress. But I’m glad I’m working my back. Final: 6 rounds + 5 Ring Push Ups

As for PWO meal, just some chicken and pureed sweet potatoes. It was breakfast that is still OH SO HARD to eat. 1. I’m not hungry. 2. I’m not hungry. 3. I don’t want to chew my food. But alas, I had 2 hardboiled eggs, a cup of broccoli, handful of cherry tomatoes and some trail mix. At least it holds me till lunch. I just wish I could drink the meal. But Whole30 frowns on drinking your meals. Something about the chewing of food and the messages that sends your brain. Work in Progress. Just fighting through today for sure.

As you can see, the shiny new excitement has worn off just a touch. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in this. I just am so blah about it right now. I guess the best description I have for it now is that it’s more of a chore than exciting. I need a personal chef. That would help tremendously! For real!

It has begun – Whole30

Happy Monday folks. If you’ve been following along most of you know, I put off my New Year’s resolution till today. This has worked out just fine. I had plenty of time to prepare mentally and get my ducks in order food wise. So this past weekend, consisted of eating mucho food and then shopping to get my health back to goodness. I know, I could have just made any day D-Day, but today seemed logical. I’m ready to do this. And I really don’t want to be back to this OOMPA LOOMPA state again, EVER. I already thought I was past this and would never return, especially to the extreme I’m at now. Sadly I did return and now it’s time to ANNIHILATE this chunky monkey.

The day before Day ONE – PREP and COOK
I mentioned last week that I purchased Weeknight Paleo, by Amber Beam over at www.paleosavvy.com. The decision to buy this cookbook was spurred by the fact that it had some interesting recipes that were a little bit outside my comfort zone but not completely way out there. I tend to get stuck in “food” ruts, which leads to boredom, which leads to laziness, which leads to me swimming in the abyss of junk food. The book lays out shopping lists, when to cook/prep things and how long I have to use the foods.

So off we went to Whole Foods. I told Ernie to be patient with me as I was buying specific items and not our “normal” veggie and protein stash. We had our shopping trip down to a science. A very boring science. So now I’m shopping for Jicama, specific fruits, and stuff off my normal radar. I’m also shopping for cuts of meat I’m not accustomed to asking for at the meat counter. To be safe, I still got some of our go to staples. This made my overall total bill a lot more than I’m used to but the meats are easily frozen to be used for another day.

My first step in prepping was to get my PORK SHOULDER ROAST going. Then I was on to chopping up veggies for salads during the week. I also roasted a chicken and split it up into portions for post workout meals. Pureed some sweet potato to go with my PWO meal. Roasted sweet potato for meal 1 of the Weeknight Paleo. And I also boiled some eggs for quick breakfast when I don’t have time for much else. This took me a couple of hours but I think it’s well worth it to be prepared.

Day ONE
Well it’s only the beginning of Day ONE but my PWO meal went down easily. My breakfast on the other hand was much more of a chore. I just am not a big eater in the morning. Like I told Ernie, had I been sipping on a nice coffee drink and a sweet pastry, it would have been gone in 3 seconds. But 3 EGGS with veggies, however tasty they were was just a beating to get it down. I had to keep telling myself that I was resetting my gut, rewiring my brain, etc. Mostly rewiring my brain. I’m such a baby. But I ate it all and I survived. And I’m pretty satiated at the moment. My lunch is packed to the specifications of the Whole30 guidelines and dinner is pretty much ready to go. Just gotta heat it up. Woohooo. Day ONE should be successful… let’s just hope Day TWO and beyond reach the same success.

MetCon: (running clock) 3 minutes Elbow Plank, rest 2 min, 5 minutes max Wall Balls, rest 5 min, 5 min AMRAP of 20 Double Unders and 10 snatches 75/45. Score Wall Balls + reps from AMRAP

How’s that for a Friday workout. Doesn’t seem to daunting right? First off the Elbow Plank. Ya I suck at this. Barely made it a minute in without having to drop. Then was barely getting 15 seconds at a time after that. The rest following the plank was much needed. Because Wall Balls were about to destroy me. It’s been at least 3 or 4 months since I’ve done a Wall Ball. Doesn’t help I’ve been injured. I started slow with a 10lb ball and seemed ok, then moved to the 14lb ball. HOW IS THIS SO MUCH HEAVIER?!?!? I could get it up there but I was scared as I fatigued that catching it would put too much stress on the wrist. So Coach ALLOWED me to let it just drop and catch on the rebound! WHAT? I loved this idea! Cause I’m a bum. But that fun left pretty quickly. I only managed 50 Wall Balls in 5 minutes.

Then it was time for the 5 minute AMRAP of DUs and Snatches. How does 5 minutes in Wall Balls last forever and 5 minutes of this AMRAP finish in a minute. Oh my rebellious brain. Before we started I wanted to test out my Snatch. So I got the 15lb techniqe bar and threw it up and NO PAIN. So I moved to the 25lb bar and NO PAIN. I was scared moving up to the 35lb bar but I picked it up and BAM, NO PAIN. Coach had me stay at 35lbs which was fine by me. And it was so much more fine once the AMRAP started and my shoulders were DYING! I got through 3 full rounds, 20 DUs and 4 Snatches. Final: 164 reps.

Oh why oh why did I show up for this misery. Because I need to get back to it and start being a mini beast. That’s why. But it sure does suck at this moment. I also got my kids up for this crap. Good thing for them is they are good at running!

Conditioning
A: 50 yrd sprint x 6 (walk back for rest)
Uh, ya, no fun. And I typically like sprinting. This was hurting my shins and my right hip, lower back.

B: Team WOD 400 m run, 100 yd Buddy Carry, 400m run
I was done as far as running was concerned. TOO. MUCH. PAIN! So I teamed up with my kiddos. Only one person working at a time but since I was barely hanging in there Coach let me walk one 400m while the other two ran. I barely finished the walk to keep up with them. Then it was my job to buddy carry them. So I carried one kid halfway, then swapped out for the way back. At the end of that I was DUNZO, so they ran the 400m and I cheered them on! So proud of those boys! They worked hard.

C: 50 yd Lunge, 50 yd sprint for time
And here I thought we were done after those 400’s. NOPE. I had a 50 yd lunge and then a 50 yd hobble. At least I showed up!

HOLY SCHMOLY, it’s cold outside. I’m talking in the teens here. We haven’t seen sub 20° in a long time! And I almost snoozed right through the 5am class!

Uh yaaa. I should have slept in! Taking 10 seconds to hit bottom is HARD. By the 3rd round, at a measley 60lbs, I finally had it figured out but I could only do 3 consecutive. My hip/lower back was dying. Like a permanent cramp. I still did the work, but I was not liking it at all. Then it came time to do 20 reps As Fast As Possible. I did 12. Then racked it. Hip/lower back was on fire. Plus, I’m Frankensteining it and that sucks even more. Finished my 8 reps then laid on a foam roller for a long time.

MetCon: 3 Rounds For time of 20 Sit Ups, 10 Push Ups, 10 T2B, 5 HSPU
Today was all about the core. I probably won’t be able to roll out of bed tomorrow. Sit Ups and Push Ups, I got. T2B and HSPU, not so much. So it was Knees to Elbows and Overhead presses with the Multi-Grip Bar which I was kind of excited about. I need to work on that overhead strength. I felt I did well with everything but KTE. So frustrating. Hanging onto the bar hurts SO bad! Time: 8:26

That’s A Wrap!
I worked out 6 days! Wooooo! It’s been a while since that has happened. With school and baseball picking back up I fear that it won’t be a common occurrence but I’m shooting for 5 days. I’m all prepped for the week to SUCCEED at the Whole30. And I sadly took “before” pics of myself. It’s funny how one (me) can live in denial about where one is at until one sees pictures of oneself. That’s a slap in the face. Big time. Bleh. I’m definintely determined for those “before” pictures to NEVER BE AGAIN! I’m up MANY pounds over where I’d ideally like to be. And when I say many, I’m mean 40-50lbs over. That’s the icing on the cake for me. So no more icing and no more cake. Gotta shed this weight and get back to the leaner version of me.

Another year, a better year

It’s 2014 ladies and gents. I hope everyone enjoyed not only their Christmas but ringing in the new year as well. As you all know, January is the month to start fresh. Gym memberships increase. Weight loss plans go into play. Etc. Etc. And yes I will join the cliché and “start over”.

I’ve never been one to make resolutions or goals really. I kind of say it in my head what I want to do but never write it down, unless I say it here in the good ol’ blog. I think mostly because I don’t want to let myself down by not meeting my goal or holding on to my resolution. This year will be different! I have some things I need to get accomplished physically, mentally, in the gym, outside of the gym and everything in between. But I’ll only bore you with my health and fitness goals 😀

My Health Goals:

1. Annihilate Chunky Monkey
2. Be a better planner/organizer so that all of my goals come to fruition.
3. Eat Clean 90% of the year. There will be vacations and there will be life celebrations and life just happens. But I really want to live that clean eating dream.
4. Complete at least one Whole30. This starts January 6th for me. And is the boost to eating clean for the year.
5. Dedicate at least 15 minutes a day at home to mobilizing/stretching. Work my way up to 30 minutes a day.
6. Get a freaking Pull Up. This includes making the time to work on this movement at home.
7. Improve my attitude towards running. I think some weight loss will help in this area. A lighter me will be a less oompa loompa me!
8. Lose weight. I’m not putting a number on this. I know where I’m at, where I’ve been and what’s ideal as far as I look and feel. I’ve learned to not weigh obsessively over the past two years and I’m not going to let that get in my head again. I just need these added layers of flub to be gone. Hopefully in the next 3 months.

I don’t think I’m asking too much of myself and I’m just hoping I can make all of the above HABITS. What are your goals? What do you want 2014 to bring?

MetCon: “Annie“ 50-40-30-20 and 10 rep rounds of: Double Unders and Sit Ups
Oh Annie, this is one MetCon I can kill, 8 months ago. But now, not so much :/ I’ve never been so slow at sit ups. In April I had a sub8 time. For the last day of the year I had a time of 9:07. And it was the sit ups that got me! I thought I had my 50 DUs unbroken but failed at 44, then at 46, then at 47. So frustrating. But I did 40 unbroken. At 30 I did like 15, then 15. For 20, I did 18 or something dumb and failed. And I managed to do 10 unbroken. I only stopped twice during Sit Ups but there were on SLOW MO. I thought I was going to puke. Thankfully I did not!

I felt like Annie was a good way to finish the year. And a good benchmark for me to retest in a couple of months. With clean eating and hopefully some weight loss, I hope to destroy my 7:58 time from April 2013!

1/1/13 FRAN NIGHT
I went back and forth on if I was going to go to Fran Night. Every year CrossFit Boom rings in the new year with FRAN: 21, 15, 9 of Thrusters and Pull Ups – the dirtiest girl WOD out there. I knew I couldn’t physically do the actual workout because I can’t do Thrusters right now, but I knew Coach would have something equally as painful for me to do. I wasn’t sure though, if I was going to have the energy to be AWAKE to workout. Well thanks to the Chick-fil-A bowl and my beloved AGGIES making it an exciting game, I was pretty awake. Two of my three kids were home. And one of them wanted to participate with me. So we loaded up and off we went.

After we all warmed up we split into two groups, the 2013 Fran and the 2014 Fran. I decided to make Fran my first workout of the year and I let my son, Justice, do the 2013 workout. I was so proud of my monkey. He is athletic and he is tough but he’s never really done a WOD at the box for time. And he’s for sure never done Fran. Coach gave him a 15lb bar and off he went. And I didn’t let him slack. I NO REPPED him on some Thrusters and several Pull Ups. He eventually had to move to bands to finish out the Pull Ups. Time: 7:18

Then it was my turn, womp womp. I was tasked with Front Squats and Pushups instead of Thrusters. The break down was 7 Squats, 7 Push Ups with fists x 3, 21 Pull Ups, 5 Squats, 5 Push Ups x 3, 15 Pull Ups, 5 Squats, 5 Push Ups, 4 Squats, 4 Push Ups, 9 Pull Ups. This was a beating. A pure beating. And I went from 1 green band and 1 blue band, to 2 green bands, 1 blue band. It was terrible. But I did the work. I haven’t actually done Fran in probably over a year and it was modified. I’m pretty sure I had completed this benchmark in the 8 minute range. For this year it was a slow 10:43! This is another WOD I need to retest in the future.

And there you have it. I did start of the NEW YEAR strong. And starting Monday I plan to start eating CLEAN!

I have all the resources I need at my fingertips. Now I just need the mental aspect to stay focused. This is a year of Looking Forward, Planning Ahead and Staying Focused. I’m also replacing AWESOME with something else. I think I’ve awesomed myself out and probably all of you as well! Any suggestions on a new WORD/PHRASE for the year?

Showed Up, Didn’t Die.

It’s been 17 days since I’ve done anything remotely active. And I was getting close to just being OK with that.

Wow, sounds like I’m at an AA meeting but instead it’s a lazy ass meeting or something. Thanks goodness the fit girl that got eaten by the fat girl inside of me is fighting. And it’s true, I let my injury get in the way of everything. But that’s the lazy part of me. It’s the fat kid inside of me that just doesn’t want to leave!

And of course I pick one of the first cold mornings this fall to get my ass up and moving. Ah well, we all have to start over/get back to it/etc at some point. I showed up at the BOOM Box, still injured, but I was there and I didn’t die. Whew. Day 1. I survived.

Strength: Dips 3×20 Strict pull-ups 3×10
Skipped the dips since my wrist is still brokedown. Pain is much better now that it’s stabilized. Hoping it heals up quicklike. Coach T had me go ahead and knock out Pull Ups. And boy was I scared. I shouldn’t have any problems hanging from the bar but I really didn’t know. Got my bands set up and just sat there overthinking everything. When I finally did one, a bone popped but not sure from where. What mattered is that there was no pain. I was able to knock out the pull ups but at a slow pace and boy oh boy my forearms were smoked. 17 days! Why is it so easy to lose strength but so hard to gain it?!?

MetCon: 15-9-3 of Deadlift (225,155#) OHS (135,95#), 200m run before each round
I wasn’t ready to go balls to the wall. Baby steps. So I opted for 135lb Deadlifts and substituted 65lb front squats for the OHS. I can’t rack the bar like I normally would and holding it on my arms isn’t as stable as I would like so I went for less weight.

3.2.1 – Go! I took off like I’m a runner or something and it actually felt good. BUT, 3/4 of the way in I could feel my abnormal powers draining. Then my brain realized what was going on and shut it down. I did a slow trot to finish out the 200m. Although I had just warmed up Deadlifts, they sure felt heavy now. Did 3 sets of 5. My right hammy was not happy with me AT ALL. Moved onto Front Squats and my out of shape self was just huffin and puffin. I barely made it to “jogging” status on the 2nd 200m run.

The second round of Deadlifts and Front Squats were that much easier cause we dropped to 9 reps each. The whole time I’m thinking, why does this suck so bad? Well you took almost 3 weeks off and it’s gonna suck for a little bit. Went out for my 3rd run and pushed a “run” for half way then slowed down to a walk the second half. Knocked out 3 and 3. Time: 13:27. Not a good time at all but I showed up! I just have to keep telling myself that.

And that’s all I got folks. There’s a butt ton of busy outside of working out but it’s only probably entertaining to me and my own. So I’ll stick to the physical activity and every now and then the clean eating. Which by the way, I do have a link to share. I tried it and it was fantabulous. I’m Squatted Out

After two days of (heavy) Back Squats and Front Squats, I can squat no more. My legs are J-E-L-L-O! As much as I know how great squats are for you I do hope we are done for the week at the BOOM Box.

As for my wrist, it’s still a pain in the buttocks but it is what it is, right?

As far as the BOOM Box, instead of having my poor poor petri moments, I sucked it up and showed up last night and this morning. I just gotta push through and modify where I need to modify. I still have the work weight loss competition and WODAPALOOZA is a month and a half away.

It’s situps. Wooooo. Not sure how long it took me but I was chatty so I took some breaks :/

Strength: Press 3,3,3,3,3
Wasn’t sure how this would go with the hurt chicken wing but as long as I held my wrist vertical without letting the bar roll back, LIKE I ALWAYS DO, it was fine at lighter weights. Got to my max weight and I just couldn’t do it. So I dropped back down to 65lbs and finished it out.

MetCon: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Front Squat (185,135) 5-10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45-50 Lateral bar jumps
My legs are still smoked from the Back Squats on Monday. And I know I can’t do 135lbs for that many reps. My 1RM is 155 which is nice and all but 135 is still heavy. The idea was to Clean the weight. But that’s a no go for me. I tried to Zombie it out but I wasn’t comfortable.

So I Frankensteined it and still struggled but managed to complete the reps at 85lbs.

The killer part was the Lateral Bar Jumps. We had to do 10 Front Squats, then 5 Lateral Bar Jumps, 9 Front Squats, 10 Lateral Bar Jumps, etc. After the 30 lateral jump mark, I was just smoked. I’d do 5 at time, 10 at a time, etc. And the Squats got easier. Damn those JUMPS! Time: 22:25

We sure are doing a lot of MIDLINE lately. I guess it’s good for me, right? The other day I used the baby 26lb KB because I didn’t want to wait for the second heat. Today I warmed up with the baby KB, then tried out the 35lb then went ahead and did the 53lb KB for the 30 reps. Boy did my back feel that. All the dang squats we’ve done. And me losing some form on Monday and my back is tired!

Strength: 10 min EMOM 5 Power Cleans 165/115
More stuff I can’t do and I LOVE Power Cleans! Ah well. I went with Deadlifts at the same weight. My grip is sucky but I didn’t have any other problems than that.

Conditioning: 3 rounds yoke push 100ft (yoke + 140/100lbs) sprint 200m rest as needed
When I was crusty eyed this morning I failed to see the 100lbs part of the YOKE push. Seriously. I have a hard enough time pushing the darn thing with NO weight on it. Coach T asked if I wanted to try it with 50lbs first. I said eh, I better try with 100lbs and if I can’t then I’ll drop to 50lbs. Surprisingly, I started pushing well. SLOW, but the thing was moving. I stopped several times after my big initial push but I made it to the cone and took off running. That took me about 4 minutes. My 2nd Yoke push would now be uphill and I really wasn’t sure if I’d move it this time around. But I did! WAY slower than the first one but it was moving. Talk about calves and lungs wanting to explode! That round took me 4:35. Still not bad considering how long my rests were on the yoke push. At one point, I even compared all my “pushing” to giving labor! Not even remotely close to the same kind of pain. But pushing with the same kind of gusto. For the third round, I was fully prepared to practice my non existent telekinesis. Maybe my brain would just move the Yoke. Sadly, I still have zero superpowers so I had to push it. For some reason it seemed lighter and I went much further on my initial heave ho. Took off on my trot and finished in 3:43! How’s that for being AWESOME?!?

In other news
You know I’m always rambling on about quitting with the excuses and just get moving. And maybe you recall me talking about walking around our building here at work with one of my co-workers. Maybe? Maybe not!

What I’m trying to get at is that any little activity is better than no activity at all. Sure I LOVE the CrossFit and will probably always love the CrossFit but I enjoy doing other things as well. And maybe you’re aren’t confident in doing too many things but if you can just take a lap around your neighborhood, then you are one step closer to a healthier you. You may start off slow but that’s ok. You will pick up the pace. We measured one lap around our building is .33 miles. When we first started we were taking well over 9:30 minutes. Now just a few weeks later we are at 8:10 minutes. My co-worker doesn’t live the most active lifestyle but with baby steps we’ll get there and sure enough progress is progress!

We decided to take our lunch to some local walking trails yesterday. Not only was it a great mental break, we got some movement in too!

I did a quick search on the interwebs and mayoclinic.com lists some benefits for brisk walking:

  • Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  • Strengthen your bones

Forced Rest Day

I need a good massage ASAP! I could very well be falling apart. Can I blame the cooler weather for my joints and muscles wanting to flee from my body? Saturday I finally made it to a Community WOD… Woohooo! But Sunday I woke up and my left shoulder was dead. DEAD I tell you. It was a struggle to put on my seat belt all freakin day. Much less get dressed, put on a hoody, lie down, etc. Needless to say when 4 a.m. rolled around yesterday, I assessed that I was going to be worthless for the 5 a.m. WOD. I did make it in to an evening class and now my legs are dead after Squats and my shoulders are hating on me now after lots o’ Push Ups. Today has to be a rest day for me.

But let me backtrack a couple of days and catch you up on my workouts. Cause I know you’ve all been waiting anxiously for such! I wish :/ It’s ok. You all have lives. And probably more exciting than mine!

Test day: Max rope climbs in 5 minutes
Yup that’s right folks, I’m still scared of the rope and the climbing of the rope. It sucks. Coach had me work on some things but I still have that fear. So for me it wasn’t rope climbs, it was: lie on the ground and pull myself upright using the rope. I’m pretty sure this is what killed my shoulders. With DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), I didn’t feel it till Sunday :/

MetCon: Death By 10 Meters
It’s been a while since we’ve done Death by anything. And Death by 10 meters shows up. A few weeks ago, I did my own death by what I assumed was 20 meters. maybe less? I didn’t have an accurate measurement. But we did for this MetCon. I know we’ve done this at the BOOM Box but I have no record of it, so it was a loooong time ago before I started blogging. I found a post where I did it on my own last year and holy heckola I got 14 rounds! And for this MetCon I got 15 rounds. 20m shy of completing 16 rounds. I guess improvement is better than NO improvement right?

Sprints and Burpees. Or should I say JOGGING and BURPEES. So I walk up for 9 a.m. at a local high school and there’s a handful of us warming up but there’s 2 overachievers there already for the Endurance group that showed up at 8 a.m. Hehe Jokes ladies. Y’all are awesome and I’m only envious! Jordan happened to even be more awesome and stick around for whatever Coach was going to cook up for us. Burpees and Running! Team WOD. Ugh. Poor Jordan was my partner. Not only did she just run 78o898 miles, now she has to do more running and have the worst partner EVER! Ah well, it is what it is.

So here it goes, 50 burpees, 200yds, 40 burpees, 160yds, 30 burpees, 120yds, 20 burpees, 80yds, 10 burpees, 40yds.
As a team we had to complete the burpees so we split em up. But we had to run as a team and not split up the run. We were on the football field so we ran the 100yds and ran back. Did burpees then shortened the run by 20yds and run back. We didn’t get a time but I’d say we did alright. The runs were a struggle. I started off burpees like a champ but faded fast. Thank goodness we surived. We then moved on to playing on the monkey bars (which I suck at), and playing around on the different outdoor stuff the high school has. We ended with scaling a concrete wall. NOT FUN. Ok it was fun when I could get my chunkalunk butt over but not fun when I couldn’t. The wall had an incline, so I could clear it at the bottom where it was shorter and in the middle. But at the end where the wall is taller than me, it was a NO GO.

Strength: 4×8 @75% 2-3-min rest
Even holding the bar for back squats was putting a strain on my shoulder but it wasn’t bad and I worked on it in between sets. Still sucked though. The Squats weren’t any more fun. There’s something about 8 reps that seems so hard. It’s not and it’s only 75% but I struggled. The easiest set was the 3rd set. For some reason, I was down and up pretty quickly. I guess it took a little bit for my brain to realize it’s not so bad.

Sounds like a ton of fun doesn’t it? Light weight on Front Squats and not too many Push Ups. Well my first round was completed in 26 seconds! Woooo and then my second round took over 30 seconds and then who the hell knows. My shoulder was dying. My right palm was tightening up on me. I was a mess. I was really hoping for sub 10 on this but I just couldn’t pull my squats together as fast as I hoped! Final: 10:49 RX

Didn’t Die and Didn’t Quit

Whew, this has been a week of managing kids back to school, work being chaotic and my workout schedule shifting back the early early mornings. And I survived.

I survived waking up at 4:15 am. I survived CrossFit. I survived getting 3 boys to 3 different schools for 3 different times. And I even managed to get to work on time if not early! I survived last minute school supply shopping, baseball practices and a football game. I SURVIVED! Granted this is small scale in most peoples lives but for me it might as well have been Mt. Everest. Look, before you start calling me crazy, this is just a blog about my fitness journey and a little peek into the rest of the crazy my life is. And it’s nothing but a speck of sand in the universe. I know there are people out there saving the world and there are people out there surviving more than I can even imagine… and yadda yadda yadda, so forgive me in advance for taking something so trivial and making it like I deserve a medal of honor! But I did survive! Hehe. And sadly, I don’t deserve a medal of honor. Just being dramatic for the sake of blogging.

I’m pretty sure the bar is heavier at 5 a.m. It’s still sleepy and dragging ass too, right? But even when I’m half ass asleep again from not getting enough sleep, I still managed through the weight fine.

Bear Complex (7 times around=1 round) 1-1-1-1 rest over 3 minutes between rounds

The Bear Complex has crossed my path several times but not in a long while. It’s also been varied each time. This time around we were doing one set. Resting. Upping the weight and go again. Times 4.

Someone like me forgets the torture that this turns out to be. In my head, it’s clearly not so tough. Just a few lifts and I’m good. Ha, just a FEW x 7 x 4. I started out at 55lbs and was ready to die once I finished my 1 REP of Squat Clean, Thruster, to Back Squat, to Thruster, seven times. Did I mention that 7 times through was 1 rep? Ok enough I know. So I moved up to 65lbs for my 2nd attempt. I had to rest a little more with the bar on my back but if that was going to get me through I was going to take it! If you drop or let go of the bar, that’s a NO REP. I survived the 2nd attempt. Time was pacing along quickly. Rest time was going even faster! I decided I’d jump to 85lbs for my 3rd attempt. And it was a doozy, but I was getting through it. I was on my 7th round, resting with the bar on my back. COACH T was encouraging me to go, get the bar up. I was just trying to will myself to finish. And I push pressed it up without doing the BACK SQUAT!!!! DOH! WTH. I dropped the bar not realizing my mistake. I just fell on the ground and said I QUIT! I have no more in me. I’m done. Sigh.

But she’s not really done ladies and gents. She has one more attempt. UGH, And I DID NOT WANT TO GO. The little part of me that didn’t want to quit, said move up in weight. You were 90% there! But the tired, limb shaking, heavy breathing part of me said NO just do the 85lbs again. At the 3rd round I was ready to drop the bar. Just be done. FAIL. Go HOME. But I kept going. Resting before the Back Squat and Resting before the Front Squat. A LOT of resting. After the 5th round, I found some peace of mind that I was almost done. I just needed to control my breathing and go. OHHHH but it was so hard to want to go. To will myself to go. Once the 6th round was done, I was almost home free. Just FINISH! I didn’t forget my back squat and finished at 85lbs. It literally took me 10 minutes to recover. I was a shaky mess. The BEAR did not win today! I didn’t DIE and I didn’t QUIT!

GRACE as Prescribed

For those of you new to CrossFit, GRACE, is a workout. 30 Clean and Jerks for time. A simple but challenging benchmark workout that will beat you down but only for a short period. This morning was GRACE for us at the Boom Box. Not what I was really feeling for my not so graceful return to the 5 a.m class, ON A FRIDAY. I was sleepy, groggy and just overall bleh, but I was still THERE!

As Prescribed is the weight that the CrossFit Powers that be think is ideal to test yourself and to retest yourself over and over again. Hence, benchmark WOD. And for the females 95lbs is the prescribed weight. Someone like me does not just pick up a 95lb bar and go. In the early days, I started at a lower weight and hoped to survive. As I got stronger, the weight went up. Today was the first day I was going as PRESCRIBED or RX as us veterans would say. And for NO reason at all I was nervous. I wanted a good time for sure but I was still just dragging ass. Hello, it’s Friday, 5 a.m., my first week back to early mornings. I wanted/needed sleep. If there was an option to just walk out the door I would have picked that option.

Last October I did Grace for Barbells for Boobs, which by the way I plan to do again (hint, hint, I will be begging for donations) this October. I went with no fuel. I had not eaten all day, walked in late, barely warmed up and went. For some reason I had it in my head I went RX last year but turns out I only went at 85lbs. I was miserable but I was under pressure to do well. It wasn’t a competition but it was a little more intense than 5 a.m Friday morning. I was so nervous this morning my stomach was starting to hurt. We got the 10 second countdown and it was time to perform. I wanted to do sets of 5, my 1RM is either 105 or 110 or 115, but I’m not really sure. 95 has become NOT HARD, but still not easy for me. This morning my biggest struggle was holding onto the bar. My shoulders were not liking me very much. So I went for 3 reps and dropped the bar. Picked it back up and on my 6th rep, I about knocked myself out as I hit my chin on the way up for the Jerk. Brought the bar back to a rack position. Stood there dazed and pissed and finished that 6th rep only to drop the bar. I made it to 9 reps doing sets of 3. This was not boding well for me. I dropped to sets of 2. But by rep 16 I was only doing 1 at a time. But guess what? This felt so much better on my shoulders and as long as I didn’t stand around staring at the wall I was going to be alright. The holding onto the bar coming back down to the ground was just not working for me today. Time: 7:03. To be honest I did it last year at 85lbs in 6:06. But I was also in better mental and physical shape. But I was still hoping to beat that time even though I went 10lbs heavier weight and I’m much more back to a starting over phase. So you know I have to have the goal that come October I will BEAT that time. And hopefully, B4B won’t be before the sun comes up 😀

Other than that we did front squats but that’s so boring! Heheh. 4 sets of 5 at 65% of our 1RM. Lucky number 95lbs! Wooo, it was just in the cards for me to work at this weight today.

In other news, I had friend come watch this morning to see if CrossFit is something that is for her. She’s scared of bulking up, which most of you reading SHOULD KNOW that’s not just going to happen. Like anyone, she has and idea of where she wants to be and of course she has a timeframe. And as most of you know I HEART the CROSSFIT and I tell everyone all the time that I do, but I have a hard time convincing people to try it out. It’s a lose/lose for me sometimes. Why? Because I’m not some super ripped amazeballs looking human. I’m average, chunky, and a goofball. So what’s the problem? Well if I was super ripped amazeballs, everyone would be intimated and not come cause they would think they would have to look like me to do it. The truth is I’m an above average OOMPA LOOMPA and people probably think … “it’s not working for this girl!” So basically I’m screwed.

At one point I was lean and was getting some definition and probably more able to convince people to try it out but today not so much. So I ask you readers, how do you get people to at least come and check it out. My friend at least made the commitment to show up at 5 a.m. to watch so that’s a start! Most people laugh at my 5 a.m. check-ins on Facebook… yes I’m that annoying person, checking in all the time! She’s still not convinced it’s for her and it may not be. And watching people throw barbells over their head is probably pretty scary. But we do other things too, that are less miserable, it’s so hard to say how it will be fun in the end and the people are awesome and to come back and give it a try and not just be on the sidelines spectating. I did get her to semi-commit to coming out tomorrow for a Community WOD. So that’s step 2. What advice do you give people to come check out CrossFit and convince them it’s not going to kill them or make them into SHE-MEN?

Back Squats FOREVER!

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! It’s been a busy past couple of days and with the holiday weekend, I did not have time to get to any blogging in. But I did get some workouts in. I did get some good and not so good food in me and we FINALLY did a proper grocery shopping trip! Wooooo. High Five!

And Ernie is finally back to getting his ass in gear! Thank goodness for me because it’s so much easier when you have your support system back! For so long I’ve caved to his non Paleo, non CrossFitting ways! But now that we are both back on the same track I hope the failures will be less and less as time goes on! We’ll be back to our old selves in no time!

WarmUp: 400m Run, 30/30 GHD

Skill/Strength: Max Effort Ring Dips, Work Up to 50
My rotator cuffs are dead to me. They don’t support me in the bottom of a ring dip and it seems as if I will never master this movement. Does anyone have some fresh shoulders that I could borrow?

MetCon: 2 minutes at each station of Max Distance Bear Crawl, Max KBS 1.5/1 POOD, Max Burpees, Max Bear Crawl. 30 seconds of rest between stations.

30 seconds is NOT enough time for rest! Holy geesh. On my first round of bear crawls I probably got 6 lengths of the box. Not great in my mind but battling hip failure, burnt out shoulders and a touch of dizzy was NO Fun. Moved onto Kettle Bell Swings and hot damn, my right hip was ready to explode. FIRE! I was pretty much done for by the time Burpees came along. I don’t even remember what I got but it was far less than what the healthier version of me would have completed! One more Bear Crawl to finish it off and I only got 4 lengths in. UGH! Total: 66 but I did it RX. Hahahah It counts!

It was Murph Day and I was going to show up but wasn’t sure if I was going to workout! In the end I was just a spectator. I had no want or drive to do the beast of a workout. But it was inspiring to watch everyone else. In the past on big hero WODs people tend to pair up and work together. This time around everyone went SOLO. It was amazing and I was super impressed by everyone’s determination!

Post Murph we had a little came of Wiffle Ball which turned out to be really fun. I wish more folks had stuck around to play. Maybe another time. So I did get a little sweat and fun in after all!

Food Note: I found some Kale Chips at Eatzi’s that turned out to be pretty tasty. The ingredients were clean and organic. The only downside to hardcore Paleo eaters was that there were Chickpeas in the ingredients. Other than that they were great. A little spendy but a great snack and beats junk food alternatives!

Friday was pretty much a day of lazy for us so I was suprised when Ernie was all let’s go up to Boom and workout! I was definitely ready to go but at the same time secretly wishing we’d just stay home!! Of course working out always feels great when it’s done so I’m glad we went.

Skill/Strength: Front squats; 5@60%; 3×5@70%
It seems that Front Squats don’t come around much and if they do I miss out on those days. They aren’t my favorite squat either but I felt good working. My last tested 1RM from who knows how long ago is 135lbs. So 80lbs and 95lbs didn’t sound heavy. By the last set, 95lbs felt heavy.

MetCon: 7 rounds of 2 minute AMRAP 30 situps, ME DU, Rest 1 min
Situps and Double Unders. Should be a win/win right here. I started off strong with the situps but the DU’s weren’t really working in my favor for the first round. I was tripping up a lot on the darn rope. After the 3rd round, I just was stuck at a slower pace for the situps. No matter how hard I tried to bust them out I was finishing around 50-58 seconds. Leaving me a minute to get max DUs! I stayed pretty consistent with the my DU count having only one really off round. All said and done I completed 333 DUs and was smoked! My calves were JELL-O on Saturday.

We took the weekend off so it was nice to have a little break but I definitely need to be putting in the work. Unfortunately my mindset for the Monday workout was not liking all the Back Squats that were about to go down!

Skill/Strength: Squat – 10@60%; 8@65%; 6@70%; 6@75%; 6@80%
WoooWeeeee. That’s a lot of squats on order. And everything just felt so HEAVY! Coach wants us to get STRONG!!!! Of course it’s what I need but just seeing it on the board makes me want to go home and sleep. I started at 100lbs and worked my way up to 130lbs. Even though all the reps can be intimidating it felt really great to finish strong.

MetCon: 10 minute AMRAP of 6 Deadlifts (225,155) and 6 HSPU or 3 Wall walks
Coach had us work up to a weight we were comfortable with for Deadlifts. My 1RM is 225 but multiple reps for time after all of those back squats was going to have to be less than 155lbs.I got to 135lbs and that seemed to suit me just fine. It was Wall Walks that I feared. I don’t have Handstand Push Ups down so I had to default to the Wall Walks. I have only ever had to do this movement one time before and it made me nauseous and dizzy. We only had to do 3 so I figured I’d survive but I wasn’t looking forward to it.

I moved the weight pretty nicely, and I thought I should have done RX but after a few rounds I was grateful I stuck with a slightly lower weight. The Wall Walks took the life out of me. My recovery time was slow. I couldn’t get to the bar fast and it took me forever to pick up the bar. Final: 6 rounds + 1 Deadlift.

Grocery Field Trip
It’s been so long since we’ve headed out to have a proper grocery trip so we decided to go big and drive to the ginormous WHOLE FOODS in Dallas. The one in Arlington is sufficient but it’s tiny and part of our regular routine. Going the Park Lane location was a fun little field trip. We didn’t spend hours strolling around but they seem to have a better selection of produce and meats. We stocked up for the week excited to be back on it.

So far so good. We’ve been cooking, eating our cooked food and feeling good. As I’ve mentioned before it’s amazing what a couple of days of all goodness will do to your body. My achy IT Band/Knee are no longer achy. My sore tight wrists are no longer sore and tight! It just feels good to feel good. Now I wish my muscles would just bounce back faster. With time I know they will. I’m just a big baby!
