Sometimes You PR, Sometimes You Don’t

rockypr-300x213

Three days in a row last week was all I could handle! Now, hoping to make four days this week at the Boom Box!

Monday was already going to be a struggle because I decided to drink too many margaritas on Saturday. That turned into a worthless Sunday and I knew it would spill over into a not so fun Monday. I pretty much kicked myself the whole time about those dang margaritas.

SKILL & STRENGTH

3x

Single leg Split Squat x 12 reps

Rest 30 seconds

Handstand Push-Ups x Max Reps
Rest 3 minutes

So Single Leg Split Squats will get you every time. My booty is so sore! I should really make these a daily thing but that’s one more thing I gotta try and fit in. For Handstand Push Ups, I just did Handstand Holds. My wrist was good for the first 2 rounds but started to get irritated on the last round.

CONDITIONING

Annie For (TOTAL TIME)

50-40-30-20-10 reps of:
Double-Unders
Sit Ups

Oh, Annie, one of my favorites. Only because I KNOW I can do this workout. I haven’t always been great but on this day I finally PR’d. Two years ago I had a 7:58 finish. One year ago, I had a 9+ minute finish. But on Monday, I had a 7:34 finish! Wooooo! But again cursing those margaritas as I was sluggish on the Sit Ups.

SKILL & STRENGTH

Find 1 Rep Max: Clean

15 min

And this is where I didn’t get a PR. I know, I know, I took some time off. And boy did I feel it. My last PR was 125lbs. But today I only got to 110lbs before I had to call it quits.

CONDITIONING

TABATA FOR: (TOTAL REPS)
3 ROUNDS, WORK 01:00 min, REST 02:00 min OF:
Ground to Overhead 135/95

After all the Squat Clean work, my wrist was getting weak. I was going to go for 85lbs but decided not to try and hurt myself so I went for 65lbs, hoping I would get more work in by getting a lot of reps in. The first round, I did 12 unbroken and I shouldn’t have dropped the bar but I did and I let it sit there for too long before picking it back up. By the time I did, I could only manage 3 more reps. After resting, I told myself I would get at least 16 reps on the next round but that was just a lie I was telling myself. I did stay consistent though with another 15 reps. By the third round I just didn’t want to lift the bar anymore, but completed 12 reps. Grand total: 42 reps at 65lbs. Not great, but not bad.

Until Next Time

I can tell you my boozing days are limited if not over. I’m still hurting from Saturday. And then add all the soreness from Monday and yesterday. My shins are dying from the Double Unders.

My eating is still subpar, but I’m doing what I can… sometimes! It’s birthday dinner for my Dad tonight, so no planned workout. Maybe I’ll get ambitious and take a jog later this evening. Hehe. I did say maybe!

Handstands Holds, KB Holds and Running

index

Before I get into the details of my workout let me just say: The workout was great! So much fun. I loved it. All you CrossFit Boom Box-mates will be so happy you went! You can stop reading now if you attend CrossFit Boom. (that’s for you Briggs :D)

For the rest of the world. I will say if I had known what the workout was when I woke up, I probably would have set a new alarm and would have gone back to bed. But maybe not.

Running-isnt-easy

It’s not ground breaking news that I despise running. I find no joy, peace, comfort, etc. in running. I’ve tried to find an ounce of happiness in taking a jog or what have you and I find nothing. I know there are days that a RUN will be part of the scheduled workout and most days I still show up even though I don’t like it. And today’s WOD had running. And it’s cold outside. Bleh. Coach made it a “team” WOD. Maybe to motivate some of us but for me, well, I feel bad for my partner. That’s sad, isn’t it?

Midline: 30 evil wheels
These may be the longest reps ever. It takes way too long to complete 30 and I felt I was staying at a consistent pace.

Strength: Handstand hold 5 max effort times rest 2 min
I know, you are tired of hearing about the “wrist” but it is what it is and the wrist is feeling better. The pain migrated to my palm for the most part and although I do feel tightness and sometimes pain, overall still feeling better. So much better that I wanted to get into that handstand that I have been forced to avoid for so long. It was a little scary, not knowing if I could bare my weight on it but after a few moments of being SCARED, I finally did it. Whew! My holds were only about 2 to 5 seconds because it is weaksauce but it’s progress! Woohooo! Now if I could just clean some heavy weight.

3/5/14 WOD

3/5/14 WOD

Metcon: Team WOD 4 rounds as a team
Athlete 1 runs 400m and Athlete 2 holds a KB over head 2/1.5 Pood. Every time you drop the kb before your partner tags you in your team runs 200m together at the end.

And here is where I feel sorry for my partner. We were odd numbered so Coach T jumped in to be my partner. 2 POOD is a lot to hold over head for long periods of time. And yes I know 400m shouldn’t be a long period of time. But there are some factors to think about. 1. I suck at running. 2. I’m slow 3. I get worse as time goes on. So ya, a fast person might run 400 in a minute or less. An average person will fall under 2 minutes. Me? I’m over 2 minutes and then slower as more laps are added.

I started with the run to let Coach T be fresh for the first KB hold. It was smart. I was slow. 2:22 I think for my first 400m. I didn’t dare go 1.5 pood. That was crazy heavy to HOLD overhead. I went weaksauce again and just held the 25lb KB. Fortunately I did not drop the KB. Unfortunately, Coach T did so we had to run an EXTRA 800m. How’s that for fun? All cause I’m so freakin slow. Time: 8:09 with 4 drops. Doh!

Made it!

success

Woooo I woke up on a Thursday morning to go workout! Typically Thursday is a rest day for me because it was OLY Class day and 5 am was not an option. But starting last week Thursdays became available for regular workouts and of course the first go round I slept in! Not today, Jack!

Eat to Perform
So far I’ve also been a champ on eating to perform! At least getting 90-95% on target. Probably a lil closer but I don’t want to do the math. I have also just started getting used to drinking my coffee black so now I’m considering going bulletproof by adding the butter and the MCT oil. I’m not well versed in what it’s all about yet but once I get it all researched I’ll share some more. If you already do this and have seen some positive OR negative things, PLEASE PLEASE let me know. I think it will help me hit my FAT intake target much better. I finally restocked on coconut flakes as well and if I would remember to pack them in my lunch I’d probably be better off!

The eating test is ON starting NOW. From NOW till Wednesday next week we will be NON-STOP all over the place with little to no time to cook, eat, breathe, etc. So I gotta be crafty with the food and not let LIFE get in the way. And even more than life getting in the way, I need my slacker side of my brain to co-operate with the disciplined side of my brain and take care of business! If anyone wants to just cook for me and deliver for the next 6 days, it’d be greatly appreciated!

Today’s WOD
Skill/Strength: Free Handstand Holds and/or Pistol work
Pistols are a super weakness for me and I should work on them but my IT band has been on the mend. Hopefully with the cleaner eating I will clear that up. I opted for Free Handstands. Once upon a time I could hold handstands, not forever, but for a long time. Oh to be young or to have just stuck with it! I can still easily get upside down but we use the wall regularly and that has become my safety net. It’s nice to work on Handstands today because I don’t typically do this on my free time. I managed to get a few seconds of freestanding, which I guess is better than NO seconds. Just one more thing to add to my list of mini goals!

4/11/13 WOD

4/11/13 WOD

MetCon: 4 rounds of 4 Back Squats (225lbs, 135lbs), 10 One Arm KB Snatch (1.5pood/1pood), and 16 lunges
As I was warming up to 135 lbs I was thinking this is heavy! And it felt heavy. It’s about 82% of my 1RM. Coach was confident I could do the weight for all the rounds and I really wanted the RX so I did it. But I wasn’t sure about the 1 POOD Snatch. I know I can do it but not sure if I can do all the reps in good time. I still don’t have the best timing when it comes to KB Snatch and I still got bruises on my forearms from the workout but I do feel I did better overall. There’s not much to say about the Lunges except they smoke you just in time for the Back Squats! And boy was I smoked. I spent too much time contemplating if my legs were ready for the Squats. I did the first and last round of Squats UnBroken but I racked the weight and split up the reps for the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I knew I wasn’t moving fast but at the same time I wasn’t really stopping except for the moments right before the squats. It was a slow but good butt whoopin! Hahah. SLOW, a sub 10 minute workout! I guess SLOW isn’t the best word, but a heavy squat for me takes some time to focus. Time: 9:35.

OMG it’s MONDAY again? Forever, Every 7 days? Seriously?

Yup as always Monday is here for your regularly scheduled programming.
I have no food reports for y’all just a bunch of BOOM BOX fun!

This past Saturday was probably by far the most random and fun Community WOD we’ve had. After a proper warm up we had some TIRE fun. There have been two tires propped up near the door of the BOOM BOX for a few months and we have yet to use them, until Saturday. They finally got broke in and so did we! We had some relays of flipping and rolling the nasty ass tires and boy did we get DIRTY!!! It was fun though. After our relay races we did a partner WOD. One person held a handstand (wall assisted) while the other person ran sprints. I’m not sure of yardage but it was close to 100 yds. So we had to run a total of 8 100yd sprints. Once the teammate holding handstand could no longer hold, runner had to stop and wait for handstand teammate to take their position in running. The runner then had to get into a handstand before the new runner could start! I figured I could hold a handstand forever but my teammate looked like was ready to stop running so I told her we could switch. I wish I hadn’t! Running sucked! It was already getting warm for the day and wow sprinting/running/jogging was no bueno! My partner had a hard time catching her breath in a handstand hold so she had me stop. I thought to myself is it really that bad? Answer: YES it’s really that bad trying to catch your breath upside down!!! WE ended up finish 2nd or 3rd out of about 7 teams. Not too bad! Way to go Andrea!!!

And we weren’t done yet! It was time for some good ol’ RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT action but with LUNGES forward and backward. We only went 50 yds but it felt like forever! Keeping in line with elementary school playground games we moved on to SIMON SAYS. Our first SIMON was a little ridiculous with the movements and probably had NEVER played the game so he got over-ruled. We started off doing air squats, pushups, burpees, sprinting and that drew the line. So Coach took over. We moved onto more simple things like jumping jacks, coordination tests, etc. I didn’t last long cause I’m a bad student! It may not sound like we’ve done a lot but all those little movements really started adding up.

We finished off the Community WOD with some ULTIMATE MED BALL! I’ve played this once before and it was a BLAST! This second time around was still fun but stupid HOT. If you haven’t guessed ULTIMATE MED BALL is like ULTIMATE FRISBEE but with a 10lb medicine ball. Our team lost but we I still had lots of fun. I hope everyone else did too. We were a HOT GRIMEY MESS to top it off 🙂 Fun times.

Post Community WOD I had an OLY class to attend, still at the BOOM BOX just back inside. If you have the opportunity to sign up for an OLY class then do so. It really helps just to continuously going over proper mechanics, doing warm ups just for the OLY lifts, etc. Although 65lbs isn’t a HEAVY SNATCH. For me it was a PR cause I have this teeny tiny HUGE MONSTROUS fear of dropping under the weight. I know I can lift more but I freak out mentally.

Snatch

So a 10lb PR was good for me not only just for the PR but for the confidence BOOST! We also worked Clean & Jerk some and I managed a 5lb PR which was another boost. I was hoping for more but it all comes down to the DROPPING under the weight. It’s easier though to drop for a clean than it is for the SNATCH. Baby Steps indeed!

After Saturday’s fun, we vegged for the next two days which is fine. It’s super hot out, vacation is right around the corner and money needs to be saved!!! Which in fact I don’t know how to do very well… but I’m trying!

This morning was a short and mean WOD. I had already looked it up last night and knew it would/should be quick but how quick was the question. First off was MAX REP PUSH UPS in a minute times 3! We partnered up so we could have a counter which is great because even though it’s not ending up being a lot of reps it’s one less thing to think about. My first round I busted out 31 push ups. These are full blown chest touch the ground at the bottom and arms lock out at the top push ups. Not your knees on the ground, half ass drop halfway and try to pump out baby push ups. We got a rest as our partner had to do their round but it wasn’t enough rest! Sure enough my second round was 22 push ups. And my 3rd round was 19, maybe 20, I didn’t confirm and I lost count. My triceps died on me. It sucked!

But the suck wasn’t over, we had 3 rounds of 15 air squats, 12 burpees and 9 pullups for the MetCon. We all know this will be short and BRUTAL but again how short would it be. I was really disappointed in my time of 7:13 but not being able to do pull ups doesn’t help. It takes time to get your feet in the bands and by the time you’ve done that you want to rest before you even get your first pull up in. I did my first 9 in a good time (I think) but my 2nd and 3rd rounds of pull ups were horrid. We’ve already killed our upper body with approximately 70 pushups for time and now we’re killing ourselves with burpees and pull ups! It was good though. You never realize how hard those simple movements can be when you are doing them as fast as POSSIBLE!!!

All in all it was a good weekend, good day at the box this morning and I got in a good 20 minutes of post WOD mobility! You can never have too much mobility work! Check out http://www.mobilitywod.com/ for a plethora of videos in regards to mobility.

Have a less than Manic Monday. Enjoy your day. Hip Hip Hooray for a 4 day week even though my holiday falls on WEDNESDAY! SHEESH! Thanks 4th of July for falling on a Wednesday 🙂

Be AWESOME.
