Surviving the Week

friday

It’s Friday! Woooo! Only one bad meal this week so far. And it was only bad due to the beverages I consumed. But other than that this week has gone along quite nicely. I’m struggling a bit with the workouts but I am getting them done!

Considering this isn’t my first rodeo, I thought I would be feeling more food withdrawals. But this time around, I’m only feeling a little sluggish. But not much more than that. I’m not even a full week in though, so there’s still time for a little bit of misery. Not that I’m hoping for it, but I don’t want to relax and then it hit me like a ton of bricks. That would be a good time to fail :/

thinking_positive1

It helps to try and have a positive attitude though, which can be hard. Along with most of the overweight world, I wish there was an easy fix. But there is not. I wish that my couple of days of hard work translated to 20lbs weight loss. But it hasn’t. I wish that as long as I’m working hard in my workouts than the food I eat doesn’t work against me. But it does. All of those things could bring me down, but then I’d be back in the same rut. Miserable. There’s no time for loser talk though. Chin Up. Move forward. Think happy thoughts!

But it does take time and it’s not instant. It’s not the Biggest Loser Ranch over here, where they workout for hours and hours each day. It’s life and it’s busy. But feeling better is half the battle and that my friends is my instant gratification. I don’t feel as bloated and my mind is much clearer. I feel better. I just have to wait a little bit to feel super awesome, when the fluff melts away. And the fluff will melt away!

Warm Up Game: coaches choice (have fun)
I don’t know that our “games” were fun. We held Planks in the Push Up Position and passed a Medball around like hot potato. But after you got the ball and passed it you had to do a push up. When one person fell, the circle got smaller. The was a burner on the triceps. I was out after a couple of minutes. The second game was a 200m run with a cone. Kind of like carrying an egg on a spoon run. I gave up after 100m.

4/16/14 WOD

4/16/14 WOD

MetCon TEAM WOD – at least 3 person teams. 1 person working you must tag in from the starting line (mats)

5 min cap
40 Pull Ups
50 Russian KB swings 1.5 Pood for everyone

rest 2 min

8 min cap
100 Sit Ups
70 Back Squats 75# for everyone

rest 2 min

3 min cap
15 Burpees
10 ft ring for the guys
8 ft for the ladies

For our first round, only one of us has Pull Ups. But coach allowed us to do Ring Rows instead of Pull Ups but we couldn’t do more than half of the reps. So Tory, did 10 Pull Ups, Karen and I did 10 Ring Rows each and Tory finished with 10 more Pull Ups. Then we moved onto the Russian KB Swings. I put in 25 reps and Karen tagged in and picked up the other 25. Thankful that Tory could do Pull Ups, she got a break! Time: 3:51

For the second round we were pretty confident going in. Tory started us off with 30 Sit Ups. She felt she was slowing down, so she tagged Karen in. Well Karen went all out and busted 50 reps in, leaving me with only 20 to do. Back Squats were light but for some reason I wasn’t feeling it. Tory started us off with 15, Karen and I both did sets of 10 and then I don’t remember the rest. But we got our 70 reps in. Time: 6:45

And finally the third round. Burpees then jump and touch 8ft target. Before class even started I was practicing to reach the target and I was missing it by half an inch. Tory then pointed out I might be better off if I was directly under the target instead of Jumping at it from an angle. Well that worked! So I was ready. Time started and Tory did 15 of the reps right off the bat. Easy! So Karen and I split up the 5. My first attempt at hitting the target was a fail but I finally got it and didn’t have a problem after that. We didn’t get our time written on the board but it was some were around 1:33.

Overall that was a good Team WOD … no running involved!

4/17/14
Midline: accumulate 5 min of low plank
I know all this midline work is good for me but it’s really a pain in my arse. I held on for 1 1/2 minutes before I dropped. Then finished in 20 – 45 sec increments. Took me right at 8 minutes to accumulate 5 minutes worth of plank.

MetCon: 4 rounds of 200 m run, 10 DL 225/155 and 10 T2B followed by TABATA dips
I warmed up to 135lbs on my Deadlift and it felt heavy, maybe cause I’m tired. Who knows. But I thought 20 more lbs. I just need to throw it on there. I did a couple and was like I’ll be slow but it’s doable. I forgot however that Toes To Bar followed! Doh. We just killed our core doing plank. Now I have Deadlifts and T2B after a run. I just wasn’t sure I’d survive.

4/17/14 WOD

4/17/14 WOD

And we’re off. My shins hate me, but I ran most of the first 200m, just walked in the last 10m or so. Then I got 5 DLs in before dropping the bar, then did the other 5. Got to the T2B and slowly did one at a time. I can’t string them together and it takes a lot of effort to do just one, but I am getting better. I didn’t even look at the clock when I finished round one cause I knew it would be sad. The “running” part of my runs got shorter and shorter each time but I at least trotted or jogged 3/4 of the run. I got a little better at the Deadlifts and stayed about the same with T2B. Time: 21:10 RX.

I was still dying when I was reminded we had TABATA dips to still complete. TABATA is doing a movement for 20 seconds, then resting for 10 seconds for 8 rounds. It doesn’t seem like it would be hard but it’s not easy. This is a workout where you want to get as many reps as possible in the 20 seconds. Then the goal is to meet that same rep count each round. Your lowest score is your score. I did modified dips and started off with 6 then dropped to 5, then 4, then held out at 3. My triceps died. Score: 3

That’s A Wrap!
My biggest battles are the weekends. On the go = opportunity to eat really really bad. Hopefully I can conquer this weekend and be successful! I hope you all will too. It’s Resurrection Weekend aka Easter to most folks. A weekend that has the potential to be full of lots of yummy foods and candies. Show some restraint if you can because this weekend isn’t supposed to be based on celebrating food. Unfortunately, as a society, myself included that’s what we are drawn to – FOOD (savory meals, big desserts, easter candy). Sure there’s fellowship and church and family but a lot of times FOOD is the center piece to all of the above. I’m not opposed to indulging every now and then but if you’re on a mission, whether your months in or days in. Just remember you have work to do and you don’t have to go nutso on the eating. And if you by chance do lose it, it’s going to be ok. Monday is a whole new day. Have a beautiful weekend!

BOOM! Whole30 Complete!

finished-the-w30-fb-cover

And guess what? I’m just going to keep on keeping on. Like I’ve mentioned before, I may not be PERFECT but I’m going to try and hit 90% weekly. That allows me to have two OFF ROAD meals a week if I desire. But right now at this moment, I can’t even imagine eating junk! I was talking about it to my box mates and I was saying, I’ve only put “clean” food in my body for 30 days. My stomach is going to hate me if I stray from that. So the desire to eat out or eat junk is not there for me. At least not for the now. Heck this is only DAY ONE of post Whole30. A lot can change. Let’s just hope it doesn’t change too much!

3029870530_3453915562_img_348630_1_im_so_excited_answer_3_xlarge_answer_2_xlarge

I didn’t take measurements, which I should have! DANG IT. But I did lose 10lbs! SCORE! I still have many more pounds to shed but it’s a good start. This keeps me motivated to keep eating clean. I did take some before and after pics but I decided I will take them in 30 day intervals until I hit a weight that I know I should be around. Then I should, no promises, share my progress. One of my kiddos who helped me take pics could definitely see the difference from my pictures 30 days ago. I’m excited what another 30 days will look like.

index

You too can do this! So look up Whole30, download their free pdfs, scour the forums, and get to it already. Someone mentioned that it seemed like it went fast. And I’ll say at around day 12 is when it seemed like the days just ticked along at a nice pace. The first couple of days are EXCITING. Wooo! I’m doing this, but after a few days in, it’s like OH CRAP I’m doing this :/. By day 12, I was definitely more in control. The mind isn’t so stubborn. You just DO! You do what you have to in order to make this work. Before you know it, it’s Day 30!

Suck-it-up-buttercup-script-22x13

But you have to make that commitment. You can’t let Birthday Parties, family from out of town, office functions, etc. get in your way! Your family is NOT going to fall down dead because you didn’t have birthday cake at your grandpa’s 99th birthday. Your boss shouldn’t fire you for not having happy hour drinks. And your Mom, sister, brother or WHOEVER is not going to disown you if they come to town and you are doing Whole30. Sure you may get questions, weird looks, exclamations of insanity, but it’s your choice to be a healthier you. You are a grown up. You are an adult. You can make your bed if you want or not. You can eat and drink till you want to explode. But the minute you decide to cut “bad” foods out of your life, it’s like, ” OH $hI†, I can’t give up wine. And eating out, not possible. I can’t do this.” And you go into panic mode. Well I’m here to tell you, YOU CAN give it up for 30 days. You WILL feel better. You WILL feel a difference. So suck it up buttercup. Stop sitting on the fence. On Day 31 you can revert to all the unhealthy foods and habits. But I’m thinking/hoping that won’t be the case. Hopefully, you’ll see the forest through the trees! Don’t forget, I’m here for you as a cheerleader or as a listener. I will support you. You got this!

MetCon: 4 rounds of 400m Run, 30 KB Swings, 15 Strict Pull Ups
Oh man, running and pull ups! Not my kind of fun at all. But if I try and cherry pick my WODs, then I won’t get better at my weaknesses. It wasn’t pretty. My runs were slow and my Pull Ups even slower. The only thing I had going for me were the KB Swings. I don’t really even have much to say except that I finished. Time: 26:42

2/5/14
Strength: Turkish Get Ups for weight & 3 sets max Ring Dips
A couple of weeks ago we did a MetCon with TGU and my wrist couldn’t handle the kettle bell. Today I could at least do the 25lb KB. I didn’t try pushing more because the good ol’ wrist is a little worn out and I want it to heal up, not get worse!

Skill: Pistols
It is what it is. I’m not there yet. But we worked on them to get warmed up for the MetCon.

2/5/14 WOD

2/5/14 WOD

MetCon: For time – 200 Sit Ups, 4 alt Pistols EMOM. Start with Pistols
My modified pistols were done by holding on to a bar on the Pull Up rig. With all my clean eating, my knee didn’t even cause the tiniest of pain. I’m always scared with my left leg because it HURTS. But today I was able to bust them out quickly. And fortunately I was able to do Sit Ups in a good time. Well, a good time for me! I did 31 in my first minute. But I couldn’t keep that pace, but from then on out I did anywhere from 18-26 reps per minute. Doing Pistols EMOM is a little break, but not a big one. And for once, I just kept a good pace with Sit Ups. I didn’t pause for anything. I would just go slower or faster, but no stopping! Time: 9:46.

That’s a Wrap!
I feel good. My brain is ALERT. My energy is up. And my overall recovery from workouts is at it’s best. Wooooooo! I wish I could give everyone a taste of how I feel, so you can experience the feeling! That would, without a doubt push you to make changes. But, alas, I have no magical skills to do such things. You’ll just have to take my word for it!

GL_Generic_LoveLife

Have a Happy HUMP Day! Do something out of your comfort zone today, like 200 Sit Ups or hold a Plank for as long as you can. Or just drink half your body weight in ounces of water (200lbs = 100 oz water). Do Something!

Also, if you are in DFW, CrossFit Boom is hosting another Community WOD, this Saturday at 9am. Yoga at 10am. Don’t be scared or intimidated. We have all levels of fitness that show up. It’s fun, laid back and then some more fun. Coach works around injuries and limitations. There’s something for everyone. Come on out and play with us!

In Need of a lil R&R

images

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I want to start off by THANKING everyone who supported me and my team “BOOM FOR BOOBS”! CrossFit Boom’s goal of $2500 was met and we had a great ol’ time. That’s at least 30 mammograms that will provided to someone in need! So Thank You for supporting us and Barbells for Boobs ツ

BOOM FOR BOOBS
Of course the BOOM Box was decked out in all pink. Several of us were decked out in pink clothes and we were all anxiously awaiting to give Grace a go.

b4b

For those of you that had been following along, I have this wrist, palm, forearm tweak and it’s been a little painful but hasn’t been out of commission painful. But I wasn’t really sure if I could go RX for the B4B event. I had taken it fairly easy during the week, HOPING it would just fade away. When it was my time to warm up and get ready, I decided I could handled the 95lbs. 3-2-1 GO and I did 4 reps, then I had to drop the bar. Slight pain set in but it was uncomfortable enough for me and I couldn’t hang on to the bar for multiple reps. From there it was a mindgame. I just wanted to quit. But I couldn’t. I raised money in honor and memory of ladies who fought a real fight. Who had to muster the courage and faith to fight breast cancer. And here I am wanting to quit a lil’ ol’ workout. So I fought through the best I could with a bum wrist. I wanted to beat my time from last year of 6:06 but that clearly wasn’t going to happen. A few weeks ago I had a time of 7:03 RX but B4B was not the place I was going to beat that. I was just happy to survive the WOD. Time: 7:40 RX

BOOM FOR BOOBS 10/12/13

10/15/13
I took Monday off to let my wrist rest and was going to take Tuesday off as well. Needing a stress relief, I decided to show up Tuesday evening to get some work in. In warm ups, I couldn’t even manage to support my weight doing inch worms. It sucked. So coach had to modify the MetCon for me, which is great, but sucky because this wrist issue is a pain in my ass.

Midline: 75 hollow rocks
Have I ever told you how much these suck? No? Well they do.

Skill: Double Under practice
Coach wanted us to work on slowing down our pace so that hopefully we could knock out more in a row. I am capable of slowing it down but I was having trouble stringing together more than 10. I’m a speed DUer. But I will learn to keep a slower pace if it helps me in the long run.

10/15/13 WOD

10/15/13 WOD

MetCon: 3 Rounds of 12 Deadlift (155,105), 9 Hang Clean and 75 DU
So I can do the Deadlifts but the Hang Cleans are not going to happen. I love Cleans too! For modification I did Kettle Bell Swings (1 1/2 POOD). This was heavier than I was expecting but doable of course. I powered through the Deadlifts and KB Swings for the first round. After 75 DUs I was smoked. So I did two sets of 6 for the Deadlifts and did the KB Swings unbroken. I had better luck at the DUs in round 2 for some reason and got back to the Deadlifts as fast as I could. This time doing a set of 8 then a set of 4. I didn’t want to have to pick the Kettle Bell back up so I did those unbroken. The last set of DUs were slow with lots of rest. I felt like the fat kid that I am. Having a hard time breathing and fatigued. UGH. My outside world stress and my physical pain is wearing on me. Time: 8:34

Hump Day!

I may only make it to the BOOM BOX 3 days this week instead of my typical 4-5. This wrist needs some rest and my brain needs a vacation. Between my kids, my vehicle and other crap…I am tired. Hopefully things get back on an upswing soon! Plus this work weight loss challenge is more than halfway over and I’m not anywhere near the number I was hoping for. I’ve had some loss but not what I was looking for. STRESS. It KILLS.

I hope everyone else is faring better than I at the moment. I hope y’all are staying strong in clean eating. If you’re not, it’s ok. Just get back on it! And don’t forget to stay hydrated. It’s cooler temps here in TX and I know when it cools down people are less likely to drink their water. Don’t be that person. And as always, go out and BE AWESOME in all you do!

Make-More-Room1

Hi

mia

In case you haven’t noticed, I was MIA for the past week. For those of you who did notice, my apologies! For you new followers, HI. I’m a hot mess and you probably want to unfollow, turn around and run! Hehe. Jokes. Well it’s true I’m a hot mess but I’m just your average 30 something trying to figure out how to live healthy, stay healthy and enjoy life. I’m up, I’m down. I’m BEAST and then I suck. It’s a roller coaster around here but I keep on keepin on. Hopefully those who have stuck with me “get” me and hopefully you new folks will as well!

So back to my M.I.A. I’m pretty sure my brain/body was telling me to shut it down last week and that my friends is what I did. I seriously could not wake up on time and I was extra sleepy all week. It doesn’t help that I was eating like crap either. So I’m pretty sure I just got a 1 -2 punch to my GUT (literally), my Head and my Soul.

images

In my funk, I did get much needed rest and hopefully sorted through some my insane mental maze. And it’s insane indeed. I was doubting CrossFit, Paleo and pretty much everything else. As I don’t get super personal outside of workouts and eating, I’ll keep it at that but overall I was just feeling blah. Everyday that I skipped out on my Boom Box check-ins, I thought I should try to make it to an evening class. Or maybe I should just run around the neighborhood. None of those “plans” ever panned out though. And as for food, my only CLEAN meals were lunch. I guess it’s better than ZERO clean meals but bad eating is something that I can feel mentally and physically and it sucks you in like quicksand! You know it’s bad, you know you aren’t feeling at your best but there you are eating the crap like it’s the best thing ever!

sad

3/28/2013 SKILLS SESSION
Although I was still feeling bleh and wasn’t too keen on going to the Skills Class at the Boom Box on Thursday evening, I still showed up. The much anticipated CrossFit Games Open WOD 13.4 was announced on Wednesday and it had Toes to Bar. UGH. My enemy. I figured I need to absorb all I could so that I could become a TTB master. Once upon a time back in my “lighter” days and not so beat down days, I could string a few together. Lately I’ve barely been able to do 1 rep much less MULTIPLES. And I missed a whole week of WODs where TTB were integrated, Coach must see into the future. I didn’t leave the skills session with TTB as my superpower but I was feeling ok that I would survive 13.4 in the morning.

3/29/13 WOD

Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes following the rep scheme below:
95 pound Clean and jerk, 3 reps
3 Toes-to-bar
95 pound Clean and jerk, 6 reps
6 Toes-to-bar
95 pound Clean and jerk, 9 reps
9 Toes-to-bar
95 pound Clean and jerk, 12 reps
12 Toes-to-bar
95 pound Clean and jerk, 15 reps
15 Toes-to-bar
95 pound Clean and jerk, 18 reps
18 Toes-to-bar…

A week off, little practice on TTB and there I stood at 5 a.m. ready NOT ready to go. HOLY COW was I going to survive the 7 minutes? HELL NO is all I could think!

We warmed up and got to setting up our bars. 95lbs wasn’t feeling heavy for my Clean & Jerks and I got a couple of Toes to Bar even though my hands were HURTING so bad. I was starting to feel a little bit better and it was just about GO time.

3/29/13 WOD

3/29/13 WOD

3-2-1 GO. My brain stopped working. I had the 3 worst Clean and Jerks EVER. Even failed on my 2nd clean. I was pissed. I had just done several and felt good and now I am doing everything WRONG. I still made it through the first 3 and was ready to tackle TTB no matter how slow I went. And only ONE TTB ever showed up. Oh I’d get one foot to touch, but not my stupid left foot. I’d be an inch away from touching the bar but not ever get to the bar. Oh I was mad. I kept on trying till that dumb clock buzzed. I felt so defeated. So sad. That’s what you get, I scolded myself. That’s what you get for being lazy and eating junk. Way to GO with your 4 reps. Are you serious??!!?? UGH I was not happy. But there wasn’t much more I could do.

I stuck around and watched everyone kill it for the 6 a.m. class and boy was that fun. After all my self hate, it was nice to turn it around and cheer on everyone else. Still not happy with myself but I had to get over that. Later in the day, we went to watch the evening classes and witnessed more awesomeness come out of folks. And then the bug of wanting a do-over started creeping in my head. It was just a thought as it was for 13.3 and I left it at that.

3/30/13 WOD
I have missed a couple of Saturday WODs already and was determined to not miss another one. Plus I couldn’t just show up on Friday for one workout for the week. I was glad when I showed up and then I was convinced that Coach was trying to kill us when it came down to the MetCon.

Skill/Strength: Front Squats: 1X5 @ 80%, 2X3 @ 85%, 3X1 @ 90% – rest 1:00-2:00 between setsIt’s been a while since I have worked on Front Squats so I wasn’t feeling confident with my weights going in. Even though my front squat isn’t super heavy, I was feeling pretty weak (1RM 135lbs). My workload ended up being 110lbs, 115lbs and 120lbs. Turns out I felt pretty good after I knocked each set down.

3/30/13 WOD

3/30/13 WOD

MetCon: 100′ Over Head lunges 45/35#, 10 Strict Press @ 60%BW, 30 Burpees, 100′ Over Head lunges 45/35#, 8 Strict Press @ 60%BW, 20 Burpees, 100′ Over Head lunges 45/35#, 6 Strict Press @ 60%BW, 10 Burpees

I pretty much laughed when I read strict press at 60% of my bodyweight! I definitely need to lose weight because my 1RM is way less than that! And I need to get stronger! But weight loss would be a better goal for now, haha. So Coach determined that I would use my 1RM – 75lbs for my strict press and somehow that sounded alright.

overheadlunges

Little did I know that the Overhead Lunges were going to kill me and strict press was going to be damn near impossible. Keeping a 35lb plate locked out over head for 100 ft is nuts, 100 ft isn’t even that far but it was HARD. The pizza I had for dinner the night before was bogging me down. I was struggling. I got to the bar for my strict press and it was a FAIL x 5. So I took off 10lbs and finally got the bar overhead. My shoulders were SMOKED! It took me a while but I knocked out those 10 reps. And what was waiting in the wings… BURPEES. My wrists are dead, my shoulders are fried and now burpees. 30 of them! And back to lunges I went. The distance was a measured 50 ft turn around and come back for the 100 ft. I made it about 25 ft and threw the plate down. I wanted to cry it sucked so bad. Got back to the bar eventually and picked up the bar. FAIL! Holy shit are you kidding me? Picked it back up and managed to get 4. Took a break. Then got 4 more! Wooooo. But I did the 20 burpees probably the slowest ever in the world. My muscles were quitting and I still had one more round to go! I was slow on the first 50 ft of the lunges but really powered through (which was probably still slow) the last 50 ft. Back on the BAR and FAIL again. This FAIL nonsense has got to stop! Finally got 2 reps, then 2 more, then 1 more. THEN FAIL! It took me 3 attempts to get the last rep in. By then everyone else had finished so I’m the one they are staring at/cheering on. Those last 10 burpees were probably my best set just cause everyone was in my face. It sucked. Time: 20:20.

3/30/13 Part 2 – the Afternoon
Ernie was half ass debating redoing 13.4 and I had the idea that maybe I would. 3pm rolls around and Ernie is OUT, he has decided he won’t do it but he wanted to go up to the Box to watch anyone who needs to get it in at 5pm. So we go up there. I half ass hang on the bar and work on TTB but I don’t have much. I kinda sorta want to redo it but not really. But while I’m there, I might as well work on the TTB. Eventually I get a whopping 2 in a row and Coach told me to get a bar and start warming up. Nah! I’m good. Get a bar! OK I guess. So I start warming up Clean and Jerks and feel good at least with that. I probably won’t do worse than 4. So I should be fine.

13_4Me

It’s only 7 minutes and who cares that my body is dying from the morning! It appears that little food and extra work are the key to me being more successful (jokes) because I ended up getting through a total of 9 TTB, hahaha. That’s not amazing by any means to an AWESOME athlete but it was amazing for my chunky butt self to get those toes up there. I struggled. They didn’t come easy and I did one at a time. I had a few NO REPS in there but I got the first 3 down and thought I’m good with that. At least I got one round in. Once I finished my 6 C&J, I thought “even better”. My score is a little higher. But those 6 TTB were a big struggle for me. But I had enough time for C&J. I got through the 9 Clean and Jerks and time was up. WHEW, that was NOT easy! I can no longer say I “CAN’T” do TTB. This was a REDO that I’m proud of. Score: 27 reps.

4/1/13

I’m still a little LOT sore from the weekend. I wasn’t even sure I would be able to roll out of bed. Slowly but surely I did even though I was feeling the pain in all of my body.

Coach tried to be a little April Fool’s sneaky on us and put SURPRISE WOD on the board and then try to tell us it was 60 minutes of Burpees. I half heartedly believed it. I was still sleeping! Thank goodness it was a joke.

Skill/Strength: Squat 5,5,5+ @65,75,85%. The + is for max reps over 5.
I don’t think I’ve worked on Back Squat since I PR’d so my percentages are a little different than I’m used to seeing. And it felt heavy! Even 65% felt heavy. I was reminded how missing a week can do that to you, sigh! I’m back. I’m back! No more missing days at a time! Worked up to the 85% and got 6 reps in. Went for the 7th but bottomed out. My legs are dead from Saturday. I felt ok with my 6 reps.

4/1/13 WOD

4/1/13 WOD

MetCon: 3 rounds – 20 kbs 1.5/1 (American), 15 C2B, 10 Thrusters 115/85
Doesn’t sound like much, but I know better. That’s a lot! Especially those Chest to Bar Pull Ups.

I started off with KB Swings and those weren’t to bad to get through 20. Since I don’t have a pull up yet, I clearly don’t have a Chest to Bar, I double banded up and got to work. Being able to kip and use bands was good for my first round. I still struggled but got through the 15 faster than I thought. It was the Thrusters that would get in my head. I didn’t do the RX weight of 85lbs because warming up I felt a twinge in my lats on my right side. I didn’t want to hurt myself doing a heavier weight. So I stuck with 65lbs. Weak I know but this was supposed to be a quick workout. I broke my first round up too much: 3, 3, 2, 2. Got back to the KB and did 12 unbroken. I had to put it down before finishing. My forearms were fading fast. Got back on the bar for C2B and I could only do 2 at a time, then 1 at a time. This took forever. I knew I had to step it up for Thrusters. I managed 5 and 5. And only managed 10 and 10 for the KB swings. By the 3rd round of C2B I could only do 1 at a time. My forearms were on FIRE! When I got through that 15, I wasn’t sure how I would survive the last set of Thrusters and something in me clicked. I did those UNBROKEN!  Time: 16:42. I was spent. That workout was brutal….for me!

Well if you made it this far I applaud you. That’s a lot of recap and probably not all that exciting. But I had a lot to report on from the weekend! Hopefully I’m back and back with a vengeance, in the box and in my kitchen. Today I started off with showing up to the Boom Box, clean cooking and eating.

Got one foot in, now lets see if the other will follow and stay! It’s a mental battle I know. I just gotta suck it up and go forward. I hope all of y’all are making the steps to a healthier life. If you fallen off the radar, now’s a good time to find your way back! Have a Happy Monday! And you know the drill…BE AWESOME!!

Trying NOT to SUCK

Woooo Monday again. Yippee Skippy! I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. It was hot in our part of the world. And we spent it all outside on Saturday for some foosball.

Before the kid’s football games, I made sure to hit up the BOOM Box, I’m sad I’ve been missing the OLY class but my baby boys come first. At least I can squeeze in the Community WOD and boy oh boy was it fun! I can rest assured that if my vehicle breaks down on me that I am capable of pushing it out of the way!

We started off with a typical warm up, then tested our Kettle Bell Skills. We did max KB swings for 90 seconds. We did American style swings and for me at 1 POOD I managed to get 42 swings in.

Annie Sakamoto doing what looks like 2 POOD. I am not that beastly. I only did half that!

We then moved outside and Coach got in his truck and told us we would get in teams of 2 and have 30 seconds to push his truck as far as possible. I was up first with Omar and we were killing it till we ran out of room. So Coach decided to set his truck up going uphill towards the exit of the warehouse complex we are in. It was kind of amazing most everyone got the same distance. No team was drastically over the top. After we went in teams of two we split up into teams of 5. We got a little further but we also hit a steeper part of the hill and that took a lot out of me for sure. I think both teams hit about the same spot. After that Coach rolled his truck back and said it was time to go all on your lonesome if you wanted.

Coach showin us how it’s done … with Briggs and Leigh on the back!

My partner, Omar, decided to give it a go and made it pretty far, so I decided HECK I should just give it a try and well la de da de I could move that truck! I don’t remember how far I made it because I was sucking wind but it felt good to know I could do it! All the peeps who showed up and gave it a try did really well – BOOM!

After all the Super Hero truck pushing we still had a MetCon to do! We had a 5 minute AMRAP of 5 Push Ups and 10 Air Squats. I managed through 12 rounds + 5 Push Ups + 1 Air Squat. Wasn’t the greatest as I slowed down a lot on Push Ups. I was beat and ready to go home!

This morning I was not ready for the BOOM though. I was tired. I ate poorly and I was super sore, not sure if it was the truck pushin or the 121 air squats from Saturday but I definitely was walking funny!

Skill/Strength: 4 x 8 of Back Squat @ 70% of 1RM then 4 x 6 of press moving up in weight each set. I ended up warming up to 105lbs for my Squat and completing my 4 sets of 8 at that weight. It wasn’t super hard but it was definitely taxing on the ol’ lower body. I felt good throughout though which is a NICE feeling overall. Typically something starts giving me grief but today I felt I focused.

Moving onto Press was pretty nice as well. We were pressed for time and I felt the little bit of rush helped me at first. There was no time for thinking and I just did. The downside for limited time is that I don’t feel I rested enough for my last set. I failed at 65lbs which isn’t shocking because my max Press is 70lbs. So I dropped down to 60lbs and finished out.

9/24/12 WOD

MetCon: 12 minute AMRAP of 10 Box Jumps (20″) and 10 Regular Push Ups. This is where the SUCK came in and I tried not to SUCK but I couldn’t help it. Box Jumps! Argh. It’s been a while since we had the BOX Jump in our MetCon and it took a hold of me and beat me up. And then my Push Ups fell apart. It was so bad I had to drop to my knees to keep up any kind of form. Blah. I completed 9 rounds + 10 box jumps. Womp Womp! I still did work. I was spent. So it was a good work just a sad showing in my opinion.

There’s always tomorrow to redeem myself! Let’s just hope I do so!!! Until then! Be AWESOME!

More Kool-Aid Please!

Today is the first time in a long time that I forgot to take a picture of the whiteboard! But I can tell you I think I did alright. Only time will tell. I don’t think being the first class in the AM will ever give me the upperhand but sometimes I do get a good leap on the rest of the day.

Skill/Strength: 3 rounds MAX Pull Ups. So I still can’t do a pull up and instead of using bands, coach had us do negative pull ups. That’s where you jump and hold your chin over the bar for as long as possible then as you fatigue slowly lower yourself down until you can no longer hang on. I SUCK AT THIS COMPLETELY! We had to do this 15 times. I did it just “OK” maybe 3 times. It pisses me off so bad but I know until I start hanging on the pull up bar 24/7 this movement is probably going to be the thorn in my side for quite some time :/

This kid is way TOUGHER than me!

MetCon: 10 MINUTES of 400m run, Max KB (1POOD) Swings-Russian, 400m run. The key to today’s WOD was to know how long it would take you to run the second 400m. If you left too early then you don’t BENEFIT from the workout of pushing yourself. But if you left to LATE then you would get docked 1 KB Swing for every second you go over 10 minutes! I know I didn’t want my work taken away and I know I didn’t want to look like a scared-y cat slacker. I took off on my first run and at a normal pace for me, got back around 1:48 and started my KB swings. I did as many as I could unbroken. Then just broke them down in smaller sets the best I could. Took off for my last run and returned at 9:50! How’s that for good timing!!! The KB swings are what counted for the day. I managed 125. Yay fun!

Jonas and I hope to do a park WOD this evening. I’ll be better prepared for this evening’s workout. Tuesday’s was just a fly by the seat of pants, lets make up stuff workout. I look forward to racing against my kiddo again. He’s a fighter which in turn will help me fight harder!

In other news:
Already checked in with Lahaina CrossFit and we’re ready to do work there next week! I’m excited as I’ve only visited one other box in my 10 months of being a part of this AWESOME community. And the one I did visit was for Barbells for Boobs so it was a good size event not a drop in. I’m sure it will be a good time and I’m excited! Seriously, who says that? Who says they are excited to drop in at another box? CrossFit Junkies! That’s who!

Y’all have a great Thursday! Eat Clean, Train Dirty, Be AWESOME!!!

Dreaming to be an ELITE athlete!

Thank GOODNESS they are only dreams. The CrossFit Games Regional Workouts were released and all I can say is WOW! I can’t imagine what the FINALS will be like!

Take a look for yourself!  http://games.crossfit.com/workouts/regionals-individual

Moving ON for sure. I’ll just keep dreaming. And maybe one day I’ll be able to complete that insansity. As for my WOD this morning – Draining for sure!

We worked on Snatch Push Press for Skill/Strength. I’m pretty sure some people call it a Behind the Neck Press as well. It’s a wide grip on the bar with the bar resting on the back of your shoulders. Like as if you’re going to do a Back Squat. Instead you push press overhead. We did a 3rep Max and I managed to bust out 3 reps at 85lbs. I still had that “popping” every time I came down with it on my Right Shoulder. I kind of googled it and read that I may have a shoulder impingement. GREAT another IMPINGEMENT. I already have one on my hip! Can I just get a new BODY? PLEASE! One that works a little better? Hehehe. I found a video at Catalyst Athletics that shows the movement. The link is below 🙂

So for our MetCon it was 3 Rounds of Hill lunges and 50 KB Swings. Dang that’s gonna be a lot of lunges and KB swings! My legs are still sore from Tuesday…errr and uh Monday! Coach tells us what KB to pick up… 1 POOD for me and now we gotta walk it to our “enemy” the HILL! I hate this hill! I really do because when we are running it’s the HILL that gets me, EVERYTIME! We walk the 200 yds or whatever it is to get to our starting point. Coach marks out a distance of what looks like TOO long for lunges but it is what it is. He comes back and tells us we will lunge from one cone to the other. Run, walk or crawl back and then knock out your 50 KB Swings. FOR TIME! 3, 2, 1 GO. So the first round of lunges weren’t so bad. We all kind of hit them at a good pace and felt good. Not feeling so good after the KB Swings. But I did do the first round UNBROKEN! HELL YA! Second round of lunges – PAINFUL! But survived. Second Round of KB Swings were not unbroken. I did 20, 5, 15 and 10 I think! I was behind John and ODB by like a few swings and was quickly catching up on the lunges but when I got back for the last round of KB Swings I lost form and the back started aching and it was sad. I managed to knock out 15, 5, 5, 5, 5, 15. Finished for a Time of 11:14. The most NOT FUN part was having to carry our darn kettle bell back to the box 😦

4/19/12 WOD

I did lots of rolling out on the foam roller. Back felt much better. Then I worked on some pullups. I don’t have much time to work on them but I hang around for 10-15 minutes. I can finally do pullups with just the green band! Only 3 but better than NONE! Before I had a combo of the blue and green band. WOOOOO! So excited. So I did 3 sets of 3 pullups on green band and did 10 reps with the combo bands. I’m pretty excited about the progress. Let’s hope I just get this goal knocked out sooner than later!

It’s Thursday folks. I still gotta make those choco cherry cookies and it looks like the brownies will be a staple in our home. Great Success! If you’re local and reading this and want to get a WOD in with the BOOM Beasts then come on out to Stovall Park in Arlington. We are doing an outdoor community WOD and all are welcome. 9am! Let me know! www.crossfitboom.com

I’m also planning on hitting up iChoosefit bootcamp at 7am in Mansfield. Come on out with me there as well if you want 2 workouts or if it suits your schedule better to do one over the other!
